Car Leasing Growing As A Way To Buy A Car

Featured Replies

Leasing is increasing as a method to pay for a new vehicle. Not surprising. As I've said on here previously many people who are financing vehicles today for 60+ months SHOULD be leasing.

Yes, I know it's not for everyone. Some lease simply to get into a nicer car than they could if they financed it with a traditional loan. Some hate to have payments.

Even with that many of today's new car buyer's would be better off with leasing assuming their profile doesn't change.

Auto leasing picking up speed

I was at a large Chevrolet dealer today and they are doing about 40% leasing in new cars.

I've leased in the past, a couple of times. I just always hated to walk away with nothing at the end of the lease.

I've always driven too many miles to make the numbers work.

I'd argue that for most people that shouldn't be a concern.

When you buy a new car how long do you a)usually finance it for and b)look to trade it in?

Do you buy new or used?

To many a car/truck/suv is as much about or even more about vanity as it is about transportation.

As far as leasing goes I'm not saying I would never do it again, just that I don't like it.

2014 Toyota Tacoma

MSRP $29,085

48 month lease $399

48 month loan $735

So at the end of your lease when you're turning in and walking away for "nothing" you walk away with about $16k in your pocket. Or you can then buy the truck outright for about $16k or $17k.

That is a good deal, especially if that is what they'll sell it for in four years.

And that's the thing how many of us always have a car payment?

If it was an Edge or Explorer for that lease deal I'd have to look at it.

Last time I looked at leasing several years ago the lease amount approached the payment amount and most all wanted 60mo leases.

Last few have been 1-3 years old with low miles. I've had good luck as they've all run up on 200,000 miles as we hand them down from one child to the next.

Couldn't get that for a Ford. Residual value big part of equation and Toyota and Honda are high in residual which allows them to offer low attractive leases. Leasing has saved the car industry.

Ditto.

What is standard miles on a lease these days?

A Lease makes sense for some and not for others. You have to consider all factors. Even factors like......4 years from now will I be transporting 0 kids, 1 kid, 2 kids? If you are not sure lease a car for 2 years until you know for sure
