May 14, 201412 yr I like the quote where he listed people who he'd voter for and ended "evern Frenchmen"! Cracked me up.

May 14, 201412 yr Author I was more bothered by the author describing Eric Miller more than anything else. Eric Miller, 28, with bad teeth and an accent as thick as his tattooed arms, Unnecessary.
May 14, 201412 yr I was more bothered by the author describing Eric Miller more than anything else. Unnecessary. I thought the same. Irrelevant to the story.

May 14, 201412 yr So you don't think race also plays a part in some of these people casting their vote for Obama? You think their vote was cast because of coal and the 3 core conservative values? You don't see the irony in the fact that their only source of income now comes from Obama and welfare yet they don't like him because they only know how to work in the coal mines? I agree that race may play a factor for some, it is always there for some. In this particular article, I do not believe the premise was race based, it was coal based, income based and poverty based. The journalist didn't think it was enough about to race to give it more than 3 sentences in an otherwise well written article. It's like a back handed compliment, it sounds good….kind of.. If they wanted to make a point about race being the issue for people not liking Obama, then do an article on how the people feel about race, but don't cloak race baiting comments in an article about the loss of a lifestyle. It cheapens the entire argument for the people.

May 14, 201412 yr I know 2 men who sell the coal right out of the pit and India is the largest foreign buyer at the moment. Not that it has anything to do with the topic, but the foreign demand is still there, otherwise the coal mines would be a thing of the past.

Not that it has anything to do with the topic, but the foreign demand is still there, otherwise the coal mines would be a thing of the past. I have plenty of clients looking for coal deals, mostly in India and Middle Eastern areas. India is also buying up plenty of old coal generation assets, as well as Vietnam and Southeast Asian areas.
May 14, 201412 yr Neighbor is moving to Ohio since he is in sales function and the coal industry is consolidating as part of reduced business. Eastern Kentucky remains dependent on coal. Too much. But it still the way of life for many. This administration has definitely 'declared war on coal' via the EPA. Is it just to 'clean the environment' (the supposed role of the EPA). Of course not. This administration owes the big dollar backers of 'green' industries. Look at the public monies just straight up given to 'green' companies. That is one method of paying back. The other way is to force up the end-to-end cost of coal and non-green energy sources. This then makes green more acceptable economically. The EPA has been the vehicle for forcing the marketplace to abandon coal or increase its rate of conversion away from coal. And they do not care about the ethics of how they do it. Remember the EPA official who was proud of their tactics that were compared to the Romans coming into town and hanging young girls to set the tone of control? Nice guys in the EPA. The guy at the top gets the blame. Lots of jobs being lost is obvious. People are upset. Does the race of the man at the top come into play with the harshness of some of the comments? Possibly and even probably. Sadly, the race issue is not behind us, especially in the monotone regions of Kentucky (of which there a lot). Would the story been covered by a national media outlet if the comments were equally harsh and the guy (or gal) at the top was white, even if they were social liberal in favor of more food stamps and government programs? Almost definitely not. I would love to see a story about the jobs lost, why they were lost and trace the reasons back to their true root cause and where the government has forced the job loss via actions by the EPA. Will we see that? No. Its far easier to do a hit piece on parts of our state.
May 14, 201412 yr I was more bothered by the author describing Eric Miller more than anything else. Unnecessary. That was part of the racism/stereotype the author was trying to interject into the article. The entire article's purpose was to stereotype the area and draw a conclusion on racism, the rest of the article was just concealment. Most people that I know vote for money/jobs, or that is what they perceive as the reason they vote. I have very few, maybe a handful, of friends that are true liberals. Almost all of them are registered Democrat but when questioned about the issues they side with the Republican party on almost all of them. Then when asked why they are Democrat the say, "because the Democrat Party is for the 'Working Man'". The same is true with the people I know that are 'hard core' union people, 'blue collar' workers, 'white collar' workers or service oriented workers. Almost all of them say they are for smaller government, against gun control, against abortion (in some regard) and against "tax and spend". But, they say they vote Democrat for "Jobs" and "money". So, at least in experience, to say that people in my area vote for any reason other then jobs and income is not right, I don't care who is running in the election.
