Poor Kentucky has no stomach for Obama

Featured Replies

He's an enemy to coal and has made no attempt to hide the fact. You think these people in the article know any more than that? And yet they don't like him becauseof race?

I didn't take the article to say race was THE factor.

Look at the jobs history for coal miners I posted.

Here's the picture of coal mining jobs decreasing going back to 1983.

Coal Country's Decline Has a Long History - NationalJournal.com

By comparison, West Virginia and Kentucky coal-mining payrolls have been relatively stable during Obama's first four years in office: In 2009, there were just under 43,000 coal miners in the two states combined. In 2012, the latest year for which MSHA has final data, the count totaled just over 41,000.

You're missing the point completely. The people in the article know a third of the jobs in their area have disappeard. Don't bother talking global.

Yep, all about race. Must be racist if you disagree with Obama even if a third of your jobs have disappeared in just his last three years. Tired act.

Right. Preach on but don't follow?

Who said it is all about race?

And why is it every time race and Obama is mentioned people pull the "must be racist if you disagree with Obama card"?

Are you saying that out of all those people in that poor county that is 98% white not a single one of those folks that didn't vote for Obama didn't do so because of his race?

Again, stats don't matter to these particular people in this article, the loss of their jobs matter and yet the article tries to steer it towards race.

I'm not missing it. I'm simply saying that the bigger picture is that coal mining jobs are going away and have been going away. The people in the article are misguided. I already said I believe their main issue is the jobs.

Pike County's population was 81K in 1980, and is now about 65K. Guess it's Reagan's fault.

Then you can't have a sensible discussion with those people who have lost their jobs if you can't talk about the global effect on the coal industry.

With 3 sentences? Seriously?

Hell, I didn't even pay attention to the race part until people started crying about it on here.

At the same time, do you think race isn't a factor at all in some of those people's feelings?

This.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Great question, why don't you write the author for an answer?

You are correct.

The author didn't say that or make that claim.
