May 7, 201412 yr This upsets me, and I'll vent: If all hunting were illegal, I would be ok with that. I realize there are people that hunt responsibly and make good use of the game, but at the end of the day: it's all about the hunt, so why not stalk and get a good picture? Meat is cheaper if one buy's it at the store when all is said and done. I guess maybe the "irresponsible" hunters, like the guy who comes around my place and kills turkeys for their feet, and those that kill bucks mainly for their rack, sour me on the whole deal. I like watching the deer around my house, and when a doe was shot last fall, her fawn yelled all night about 40 yards from my house. They are not completely ignorant insects. In the case of this grizzly, it has survived the wild for years, and one guy with a big rifle is famous for killing it?

You make some great points, but one other point is that some of the animals that are hunted are hunted as part of population control. If not for hunting some animals would turn into a huge nuisance, especially for farmers.
May 7, 201412 yr FWIW I don't know a hunter that doesn't enjoy eating what they take. Same here. I know trophy hunters exist....and I don't understand, appreciate, or condone that....but I really do believe trophy hunters are a case of "one" bad grape spoiling the bunch.
May 7, 201412 yr I know a guy who is a big time Trophy hunter, he's went all over the world. Even then all of the meat is recovered and used to feed the needy in the area he is hunting. Also Trophy hunters bring big $$$ to the local economy. As long as they are not breaking the law and the meat isn't being wasted I don't have much issue with them either.

To clarify, when I said "trophy hunter", I meant someone who just kills without any regard for the meat.

That couldn't be further from the truth. For $55 I can take 2 deer, for an additional $15 I can take 2 more. For $70 I have probably a years worth of meat. In regards to the OP, if this is the same bear I'm thinking of this guy shot it with a bow at spitting distance. Same here. If you are talking about trophy hunters that shot deer for example just to take their heads for mounts and leave the rest to rot I agree. If you are talking about trophy hunters that take the trophy then donate the meat feed the hungry programs then I we couldn't be further apart on this. I support any hunter and their intentions as long as the animal is not wasted. If I kill more then one deer in a season I will normally donate one of them to the Hunters for the Hungry program. My wife won't eat deer meat so there is no need for me to keep that much.
May 7, 201412 yr Author I don't know if you're being sarcastic, or serious, but I completely agree if you're serious. Never understood people getting their enjoyment/amusement from murdering another living creature. Im dead serious. It does tick me off to see an animal like that killed. They are so beautiful. I squirrel, rabbit, deer, coon, bird hunt. But these types of animals are to me are just so awesome. I hate to see it just killed like that. I guess I feel it is a way back to the old days when bears roamed the wilderness and were plentiful. I just have different feelings towards this type of animal.

May 7, 201412 yr Author Brown bears are plentiful in Alaska. Not like squirrels or rabbits. Very majestic creature. Maybe its the danger of meeting one while hiking or just the thrill of seeing how awesome they look in the wild.
May 7, 201412 yr Not like squirrels or rabbits. Very majestic creature. Maybe its the danger of meeting one while hiking or just the thrill of seeing how awesome they look in the wild. Well they're apex predators. There just aren't going to be that many of them as densely packed together as squirrels and rabbits are. "Dense" to a brown bear is 20 or 25 of them sharing a 500 square mile range. I don't disagree that there's some amazement and awe associated with the idea of running into one in the wild, and I'm not disregarding that at all. I just think that you can still have all of those things while also healthily and responsibly hunting them.
May 7, 201412 yr Okay, a couple of points. One, I see in the story that he (the hunter) actually stalked the bear. That's fine. While the story says baiting is allowed under the regulations, I hate that. My best friend and his family went bear hunting awhile back, and he showed me the video that was taken. It looked like they had set out a trash can with a bunch of garbage in it, and then high tailed it to higher ground, and then just waited. Bear walks in, gets shot. I just sat there shaking my head as we watched it. He said "what?". Told him it wasn't hunting, that it was target practice. Two, if he (or someone else) didn't use the meat...I agree with the others, it was a senseless killing. Again, my friend has a ton of trophies in his house (even a giraffe!) that he's taken. And I know the majority of them he's taken the meat, or others have. But to kill just for the thrill or for the trophy is a waste, IMO. And finally, it says he was out hunting moose when he came across the bear tracks. I know it says there's a liberal bear hunting regulations, but do you have to have any sort of permit to go hunting bear? Obviously in self-defense is a completely different story. But, in this case, the guy admitted to hunting the bear down.
May 7, 201412 yr On the last point, my guess is if you hunt any species in Alaska, you go ahead and purchase a brown bear permit just in case. On the topic of meat, I agree with most of you, it would be wrong to waste it on purpose. There are times when I have given deer meat away to someone that I knew could use it and I already had enough in my freezer. I will still hunt, even if my freezer is full, if I have a legal tag because I enjoy the hunt. I would never waste an animal just to take a so-called trophy though if I didn't have a good use for the meat.
May 8, 201412 yr I've seen a few bear hunts on cable hunting channels and they make me sick when….some yahoos throw a bunch of donuts, maple syrup, and other candy in a barrel and lay in wait in a tree stand 20' plus in the air to shoot a bear from less than 30 yards away regardless of the weapon. This guy stalked a grizzly on the ground while hunting for moose. He very easily could have been mauled, charged, etc…completely different story from the above candy bear hunt from a tree scenario and it appears he was licensed, permitted to and honestly has more guts than most we'll all ever know. I respect all sides of the fence on this one. The last animals I would hunt for survival would be a moose or grizzly. This guy hunted both whether he could get food from the grocery or not. Please note, moose kill people as well and are to be respected.
