Teacher tells kid he can't read Bible

"during a 90-minute session designated for free reading."

Why wasn't the teacher teaching? That's a long time for free reading.

That's was my first thought too.

School tends to "wind down" towards the end of the year.

That being said, 90 minutes is about 60 minutes too long for a "free reading period".

A question comes to mind. In Obama's America had this been a devout Muslim student reading his Koran would the teacher have reacted the same way?

Sadly I doubt it.

Why??

90 minute free reading means one thing... Lazy teacher.

Why??

Because in the politically correct America it's perfectly acceptable to do something that may be offensive to a Christian but we must bend over backwards to accommodate those of the Muslim faith and mot cause them distress.

I think that's a bit of a reach, and if anything it's more the other way around. It seems if anything is done to accommodate non Christian (not just Muslim)beliefs, many (not all) Christians are terribly offended. And why do you blame this on "Obama's" America??

I don't think I could disagree more with you and I said Obama's America because he is our apologist in chief.

Let me say, that I don't agree with not allowing the child to read the bible (or whatever he chooses to read) during the free time. And while I don't think it's all, or even the majority of Christians, you can't deny that there is a group that just isn't very tolerant and take any accommodation to another belief as a grave affront to Christianity, and are very vocal about it. You hear it on these boards here all the time. You even mention "bending over backwards" to accommodate. How have you bent over backwards, or gone out of your way to do accommodate. In reality, I'm betting you (and not just you, but most of us) haven't had to do much, if anything at all, except exercise a little tolerance.

I'm fairly confident, that a Muslim student in the same situation, would have been treated the same way at that particular school.

We, and I speak of we as a country, discipline soldiers because they MAY have been disrespectful towards a Koran, we jail a man after scapegoating a video he made that was offensive to Muslims and used it as an excuse for our apologist in chief being asleep at the wheel, we cow tow to organizations like CAIR and yet OUR government funds "artists" whose work includes a crucifix immersed in urine, WE try to force a small order of nuns to pay for birth control and our government refuses to call the attack at Fort Hood what it is. An act of terrorism by a radical Islamist. Lets just say I see things differently and I have no confidence at all that this teacher would have reacted the same way had it been a Koran.

It's 88 mins too long for me.

Let them read whatever fiction they want to read during free time. Bible, Koran , Huckleberry Finn, Martian Chronicles... Reading is good.

The Bible isnt fiction. Just my opinion though so as not to hurt anyones feelings. I sure hope the kid wasnt pushing this stuff to others. Christians must keep stuff quiet and secluded as not to cause problems.
