If a school does not have a weight lifting class in each period of a school day then all the athletic programs at that school will suffer. A school can't have one weight lifting class a day with 60 kids in the class and expect to have a quality weight lifting program. I'm not sure how Lincoln County runs their weight lifting class but would think they would need more than one class a day.

Agreed. Especially if just given one hour. Granted, if that's the last period of the day, then it can just run into after school (for those not playing multiple sports).

In school weights or not having in school weights depends on your school and the kids. If you are a school (smaller school at that) who shares multiple athletes(as they should), then in school weights is almost a must.

...if you are at a school where not many football kids are doing other sports, then it's not as needed.

The layout of the school/community plays a part, too. With independent schools, you don't have many kids who live outside of 5 miles (max) from the school (if you do, then chances are that they are choosing to come to that school for a reason). At many of your county schools, transportation becomes a problem. It's hard enough to get kids who live 10-20 miles away out during the season on a full time basis, let alone Jan-June.

Larry Anderson the old superintendent at Whitley county, which is a large land county, instituted an after school activity bus that ran daily for years. I don't know if they still have it, but it allows more participation in sports, band, tutoring, etc. Cost some money but didn't take any in school credit opportunities away.

Those would have to happen at places like that if no in school weights.

That, or find a way to give the kids credit like I know they do at schools who have it during the day, where you can earn two full credits (electives obviously)...most take their sophomore and junior year.

I don't think you have to have weightlifting in school all day, but it sure does help. I have heard that Boyle County has that type of setup and it has been helpful. I think a lot of people have a negative impression of weightlifting but whether kids play sports or not, a weightlifting class is beneficial for kids' health and self-confidence. And having a teacher who can help with that, along with things like nutrition, in the weight room would benefit not only our sports programs but also our society.

You nailed it. It's all perception.

It's like teaching positions in the district that almost all districts have (alternative school, ISS, Drivers Ed, Homebound, etc....all or a couple of them). If it's not a coach in those positions, all is right in the world....if those positions are coaches, in particular football coaches...then crap hits the fan.

I know a couple of the districts who have In school weights who just came to the realization that....band goes on during school, chorus, and other elective areas that are also extra curricular...they aren't tested areas anymore. So, if they can offer those areas to kids, why can't they offer this to our student-athletes (boys and girls, which are both involved at the schools I know of who have it during the day.)

I think one of the big concerns there is the basketball situation, and that I don't think the basketball kids playing football is very highly thought of. Most of you that know me on here I think would know that I'm not one for throwing out rumors and hearsay, but I've heard it from enough people in the mix to not help but think 'where there is smoke there is fire'.

Lincoln County always has thought they were a basketball school. Even back in the days when they weren't very good, not even making it to the 12th region tourney (which, lets be honest..it was and still is one of the most wide open regions in our state)....you always got the feeling that basketball wanted to be king.

Sad thing is, they could be very good in both. But......

In the beginning (1974-75)......

The basketball team was very good as a result of five schools coming together as one. The football team wasn't as good because there was one school (Stanford) stepping its football program up a couple of classes with four other schools that didn't play football.

In fact......

If you look at the years that the basketball team won the Region (after that first year in 1975), you'll see very good football teams those years, too.

The last two teams that made the Sweet Sixteen coincided with the last two really good football teams and included Ryan Young, Braxston Miller and Trent Calhoun, who played both sports.

I'm curious to know who the players are like Young, Miller and Calhoun who played basketball only in the past six years.

The current basketball coach has been there for eleven seasons since 2003-2004 and has posted a record of 202-136 (.597). During that same time, the football team has been 53-68 (.438).

If you look at the 11 years before that......

The basketball team missed the Regional Tournament 6 times, had 4 first round losses and one semi-final appearance.

The football team during that period posted a record of 74-56 (.569), played in one AAA championship, had two district titles, and played in two regional titles.

There is no doubt that the current basketball coach brought stability and consistency to the Lincoln County basketball program. He is the longest-tenured and most-winning coach in school history. Has he hurt the football program? I don't see it but, then again, I'm not familiar enough with the basketball players over the past 11 years to know who would have helped the football team.

Large rural county schools are more likely to have cycles of talent that affect football more than it does basketball. Lincoln County has never been exempt from those cycles of talent but in the past six years, "lack of talent" has been the mantra. In the 34 years before that, there was never a talent drought like that. One down-year was usually the rule and, even then, it seemed like bad luck went along with it (you make your luck, right?) but the past six years are either an aberration or a trend. Only time will tell.

The next coach at Lincoln County will have a good feeder program of football players from the adjacent middle school, the largest area enrollment with which to work and the support of a community that loves football and has historically provided a larger following for the football team than the basketball team (when winning, of course).

Back in the day, that ole' Kings Mountain Gym was rockin' so I've heard!

I personally think Memorial High School was put together for the purpose of being more competitive in basketball. Kings Mountain had already been merged with some kids going to Highland and some to Waynesburg. Then, Highland and Waynesburg merged to form Memorial. They had some really good teams over a 23 year period (1951-52 through 1973-74).

Lincoln played their first couple seasons at the Kings Mountain Gym until the gym at the new school was completed.

Just the first season. It was a cool venue and the crowds kept swelling as the season wore on. That was a special team.

Thanks for the clarification on that. I assume they played at Memorial because it was bigger than any other county gym?

Bingo! That's what I was thinking with the comment.

It was the largest/newest gym and Memorial's Coach (Roger Meek) was the new school's coach so it all worked out.

Most people call it Kings Mountain Memorial but it was actually Waynesburg Memorial. Kings Mountain elementary was moved there after consolidation and it was knows as "Kings Mountain" after that.

Does Danville or Boyle take kids from Lincoln in athletics?
