Are you serious? Since when does Jack Haskins not have good players? Same with Jim McKee. No way those guys should be anywhere near this list.

Tom Larkey, Jim Matney, and Larry French have had players too but I'd argue that they BUILT them through programming.

I'll give a name that is forgotten about, but Pat Gates.

 

He was the HC at both Crittenden County and Caldwell County. He won State Titles at both schools.

 

I think Crittenden was either the 85 or 86 Class A champs and Caldwell County in 98.

 

That Caldwell County team was a little more loaded than once given credit for. Their QB, Childress went onto play QB for Murray State and started as a true freshman, earning All OVC Freshman Team or something to that nature. Their RB that year, Fuqua also signed to play at Murray State but ran into some legal trouble.

 

With that said, Pat Gates won two state titles at two rural, western Kentucky programs who aren't exactly on the "Top Programs in Kentucky" list.

Not sure Lamar Dawson was just from coaching.

 

Lamar got him titles but Larry was still a winning coach without Lamar. Lamar just got him his first rings.

Nelson always got the most out of his teams at Greenwood. That 09 Greenwood class called themselves "The Difference Makers." Nelson took that group further than other coach in that school did.

I see this is just your 3rd post and just recently registered, and wanted to say welcome to the board if no has done that already. As a guide, if you have any questions just ask me or any of the other guides you will see floating around here, and enjoy the board.

This list may very well begin and end with Phillip Haywood of Belfry and Dudley Hilton formerly of Bell County.

 

Don't think there is a coach in the State that has been able to do more with less compared to those two.

 

Belfry has only had two kids (Tony Messer and David Jones) go on to a Division 1 School in the past 11 years... and even at that only one was a FBS school. Yet, Haywood has guided Belfry to 10 State Semi-Finals, 7 State Finals, and 3 State Championships over that stretch... all the while with a heavily declining economy He is the State's All-Time winningest coach despite a very old school offense and traditionally teams that lack speed and shear athletic talent.

 

The only coach who could make a claim was Dudley Hilton who saw similar results at bell County with a similar talent pool.

Mike Holcomb is the next guy...he has won it all at Breathitt County and had an absolutely dominant run where his teams could have played with anyone in KY for a while.

 

I also will give a special shout out to the Head Coach at Monroe County... not an easy gig there and with lots of obstacles being rural farm country. Talent pool is very limited...yet they field a competitive team every year it seems.

 

Larkey, Matney, and Chuck Smith all get special mention as well. Smith would seemingly be at the top of the list but Boyle had their fair share of major college prospects under his tenure. Matney brought two rural doormat programs to prominence but just hasn't advanced past the Semi's. Larkey has made the Finals but has not won it all.

Jacob Tamme was a pretty good player.
