I don't get the angst with the SK staff. Matter of factly it is laughable. People saying that Coach Steiner's record is .500 and have underachieved is simply wrong and with a little effort one can look up the records and find out the truth, but it is easier to just throw something out there in an attempt to troll.

 

Let's look at some of these stats:

2005-06: 20-11 and Regional Runner-Up

2006-07: 24-9 and Regional Runner-Up

2011-12: 23-8

2013-14: 15-14 Regional Runner-Up

Last nine years he has posted seven district titles and three runner-ups while tallying a 154-112 record.

2011-12 8th Region Coach of the Year and finished top 3 in state coach of the year.

 

SK also plays one of the toughest schedules in the 8th Region.

This year alone they played: Holmes, Mason County, Johnson Central (region champ), beat Fleming County (region champ), Campbell Co (region champ), CovCath (region champ)

 

A far cry from underachieving if you ask me.

I the love posts alluding to us being city slickers. I remember when we moved to Independence, at the time being seven I thought we had hit the edge of the earth. Believe me, we have plenty of bumpkins.

I don't understand the tournament structure. I would have loved making the trip, I love the old gym but if they play in the 6 or 7pm game on a workday it is impossible for me to make the trek. I wish the schedule could be set up for Friday and Saturday games.

Several thoughts....

 

....next year, the boys will play the championship game on Saturday, as the boys and girls rotate their region schedules each year....Tuesday night is certainly a little more difficult for some folks. It was disappointing to see SK's low crowd on Tuesday - the final is more fun when played in front of a packed house. South easily had 75% of the crowd - but it is what it is.

 

...during the regular season, Pegasus is devoted to the Oldham schools, but we serve as the official voice of the region tournament when tourney play begins, and we cover every game. SK had an inspired run, surviving big rallies late by Shelby County and Oldham County to punch their ticket to the finals. And when they got there, they elevated their play. The SK team of the finals performed 100% better than the SK team of the first two games. Trent Steiner had his team as prepared as they could possibly be, and they were successful in slowing down the Dragons, who average over 77 points per game, the third-highest average in the state. I like Trent - he's always been very courteous to Pegasus Sports - and honestly, he did a fantastic job of coaching this team up for the big game.

 

Kudos to the boys in blue. As for the fans who made it to the game, they got treated to a great game. (Those who didn't make it, I hope you were listening on Pegasus Sports! LOL :thumb:)

 

....as for South, CONGRATS to Steve Simpson and company on a great run. For the second straight year, South stumbled in the district final, only to crank it up for a nice region run. Nobody can accuse South of getting an easy path; Owen County unleashed Sawyer Williams at his best on them, and South held on for a round one win. Pre-season favorite Collins was nearly knocked out early when South unleashed a 29 point first period against them, but South showed their moxie when Collins rallied to force overtime.. And then the Dragons had to win their second overtime game in as many nights against SK.

 

The Dragons did it with only one returning starter from last year's regional champs, but with their usual brand of basketball: a furious pace, a defense that comes at you in waves, with plenty of fresh legs entering the court frequently, and so many different shooters that it's impossible to know who to concentrate on.

As a long time follower of the 8th - I called my first game in 1979 - I agree that the 8th is a bit down this year, overall. But that in no way changes what we just saw - one of the most entertaining region tournaments in years. Seven games - three went to overtime. Only one game decided by more than 8 points - and it was a one possession game in the fourth. A championship decided in the final 10 seconds. What more can you ask for??

Wow. No one from SK is bashing the football coach. He saved the program from circling the drain.. The BB coach has barely won 50% of his games over a long tenure with some really good talent. Maybe the SK fan base has grown weary of the success of the BB team? BTW, Henry Co isn't in our back yard like it is for the Oldham schools. Maybe parents don't want to risk the lives of their precious children on that mess of a highway late on a school night......

 

Steiner should call Marksberry for a lesson in scheduling, maybe that would end non sense like this. That guy takes on all comers and gets no love, while the football coach schedules tomato cans and is revered. Odd viewpoint in Indy.

Both teams played very well. SO was extremly fast i thought and they played with a ton of heart. With that being said, I do think Sk really shot themselves in the foot in OT. Up by two with under a minute left you have to run a play within 30 seconds or a turnover is bound to happen. Thats just how high school ball is. i thought the player who committed the turnover that lead to the score that tied the game was very careless with the ball. Sk shot themselves in the foot, but thats why they call it march madness. All the luck to SO, hopefully they advance in the tournament.

For the record, .50/.50 is still mediocre. Going to regionals should be guaranteed in that week district and the 8th region is sub par as a whole. Jon Jones should be coach of the year every year in that region. Too much talent moving through Independence to only have a .500 win % IMO.
