South Oldham 50 Simon Kenton 47 (8th Region Championship)

Featured Replies

Owen County packed the gym and they are an hour away. They must not do homework over there, what a bunch of garbage. Nobody is saying you have to make the commute daily but for three games in the region to support a scrappy, hard-nosed team, I would've made the epic Illiad like journey to New Castle. I get you don't like being in the eighth, but all I'm hearing are excuses. I'm not from SK but I enjoyed watching them play the whole tourney.

Well said! I remember when SK was moved to the 8th Region at the start of the 2005-06 school year, many SK fans thought they would be cutting down the nets on a regular basis since they thought the 8th Region to be "weak".

Where do people come up with this stuff?

I was very surprised that SK made it to the finals to be honest with you.

Largest school in the 8th region! Can only beat the A and AA schools consistantly.

Laughable...

Traffic had nothing to do with it. SK never has a good crowd at the region. I find it interesting that a school that has the passion to constantly bash their football coach (also very successful), and a segment that loves to bash their basketball coach (very successful), can't find the energy to drive to New Castle to support their team. I don't write this to bash your team. I loved watching them all three nights. They play physical, unselfish, hardnosed team basketball. They are a joy to watch. Your band and the fans that did show up were into the game. Good for them. I simply believe someone should call things the way they are. Most of the posters on this site have started with I listened to the game, etc.

I've been down to regionals with SK every year since they joined the 8th until this year. The crowd has never been an issue in the past for SK.

SK has a larger than normal group that like to moan and groan and complain about everything. I am calling you out. Why should we listen to you if you don't care enough to go watch a quality team play their hearts out in a regional championship game? You should be embarassed.

People inflate one or two posters, which every school has, with a large group.

Who knows why the crowd wasn't good this year. I'll tell you it's the exception and not the rule with SK sports. I work 60 hours a week and wasn't able to make it down to the game this year. I guess that means I'm an embarassment and a bad fan....

You might be the exception not the rule.

Well I for one have been to every 8th region tournament since SK joined the region and it is true they never have brought a good crowd. The second worst attended final was the SK Oldham final a few years back, I think it was in 07. Complain about the drive all you want the fan base is simply horrible.

It seems to me that laughable is a good way to describe the lack of support that SK receives when the tournament rolls around.

How was the SO crowd? Their student section had about 18 kids for the Thursday game vs Owen.

This was a superb tournament. With the exception of the Oldham-Henry game, every game hung in the balance in the last minute. And, that was a pretty good game.

I have a question for you guys, mainly SK folks. Do you think they'll realign the region at all? Doesn't it seem a bit stretched out the way it is now for SK and the Oldham County schools to be in that region? It doesn't make geographic sense to me.

I got it from the mouths of some SK fans. Many NKY/9th region folks historically have tended to look down their noses at the communities south of them in terms of athletics. I'm not looking to paint every SK BGP member with that brush, just saying what I heard from some folks back in 2005.

Owen Co always has a good crowd at big games and while they do have homework the teachers in the the district would NEVER assign much on a night when they were in the regional finals.

Admittedly, I'm jerking your chain a bit and having some fun at your expense. Guilty. SK crowds are small every year. I get the trip is long, etc., but no one can convince me any homework is worth the experience of seeing your school qualify to go to state. Life is about living not reading about it. I just find it funny that the fans can't stand the heat of criticism, but you can sure dish it out. Owen, spencer and Gallatin are relatively small schools that fill the house.

From what i am hearing with the re districting they will get their wish and head back North. Then they can be a below .500 team.

Good luck to SO at RUPP!

What are you hearing about redistricting? I haven't heard anything. Do you have a source?

I'm in favor of staying in the 8th region for basketball. I hope re-alignment (if it happens) keeps the core NKY schools in 3 different regions, allowing more schools an opportunity to advance to Rupp. I also think the 8th isn't as good overall as the 9th or 10th region.
