I'm in favor of staying in the 8th region for basketball. I hope re-alignment (if it happens) keeps the core NKY schools in 3 different regions, allowing more schools an opportunity to advance to Rupp. I also think the 8th isn't as good overall as the 9th or 10th region.

But there is the complaint of not enough fans in the stands, don't you think that the travel on a week night that distance had an effect? I'm not complaining, only thinking that it would be easier for SK to be in the 10th for instance, travel wise. Do you agree?

Bullitt East has gone to state twice out of Louisville when they couldn't get out of the 8th. Collins compares to Holmes, Oldham compares to Cov Cath, South Oldham compares to New Cath, Anderson vs Cooper, Shelby vs Ryle, Grant vs Conner, Gallatin vs Newport, Owen vs St Henry, Henry vs HC, SK vs Dixie. I would say they are about even. Neither bring home the big trophy very often.

Personally, I think the fans issue is two fold with the biggest being apathy over an underachieving team and the distance on a school night. However, a move to the 10th doesn't help at all if the regional tournament is in Mason or Montgomery. As far as regular season goes, SK plays mostly 9th region schools with some 8th and the required district games.

Lol. Did you really compare Oldham to CovCath? Hope those crazies don't see that or this thread will explode. South Oldham to New Cath? No way. Of the 'matchups' you listed the only advantage I see for the 8th is Gallatin over Newport and that's a pick'em.

I think you are missing his point on the comparisons. His comparisons are based on historical demographics and enrollment numbers, not the results of the 2013-14 season.

Year in and year out Cov Cath may be better. My point is there is not that much difference. Oldham has had some good talent over the years. Dante Smith went in the first round of the NBA draft out of Oldham. Shelby has had multiple Mr. Basketballs. Over the years the comparisons of talent is more similar than you think. UK players Mike Casey, Charles Hurt, Jimmy Dan Connor vs Dicky Beal, Troy McKinley, I'm sure I am missing some. My point is not to knock the 9th, I just don't think you all recognize there is talent in the 8th. There are down years in both regions and good years in both regions. Typically, a state championship run is going to come from Holmes, Cov Cath or New Cath or you could throw Highlands in the mix. The 8th has had Shelby County, Scott County and Oldham County at their top. Those 3 historically could play with any of your top 3. The rest of the schools have there good years. Scott County is gone now, but Collins, Shelby, Oldham and South Oldham will be traditional powers. I would agree that the 9th is better this year than the 8th. I don't know anyone that would argue that with you. But I think data could be gathered on the number of state tournament wins, the number of D1 athletes, etc, and it would show that the two regions are similar. The 9th is not in the class of the 6th, 7th or 11th, - neither is the 8th. Both are typically good enough to win a first round game if they get a good draw, but likely to get bounced before Saturday. The 8th isn't going to win this year - Hopkinsville is loaded, possibly the pick of the tourney.

All I see is that SK nearly won the 8th and they wouldn't be a top 5 team in the 9th region (No offense SK fans). It's ridiculous to make the comparisons that you've made.

Again, if you're only looking at THIS year...then, no doubt, the 9th is better. But, I think long term, they're closer than some people may think.

Sorry, as it stands I see no State Titles for any of the current schools in the 8th. I would have to say that the 9th has done way more in the Sweet 16 than the 8th since the regional reallignment. Would you not agree?

You got the 8th correct at 5-8, but the 9th is 10-7. Holmes was 3-1 in '08 (loss to Mason Co in Final). I expect CovCath to make a nice run this year.

I don't get the angst with the SK staff. Matter of factly it is laughable. People saying that Coach Steiner's record is .500 and have underachieved is simply wrong and with a little effort one can look up the records and find out the truth, but it is easier to just throw something out there in an attempt to troll.

 

Let's look at some of these stats:

2005-06: 20-11 and Regional Runner-Up

2006-07: 24-9 and Regional Runner-Up

2011-12: 23-8

2013-14: 15-14 Regional Runner-Up

Last nine years he has posted seven district titles and three runner-ups while tallying a 154-112 record.

2011-12 8th Region Coach of the Year and finished top 3 in state coach of the year.

 

SK also plays one of the toughest schedules in the 8th Region.

This year alone they played: Holmes, Mason County, Johnson Central (region champ), beat Fleming County (region champ), Campbell Co (region champ), CovCath (region champ)

 

A far cry from underachieving if you ask me.
