I saw it happen during a district game. The team was out of timeouts and the coach wanted to take his seniors out but was out of timeouts. The official acted as if something was on the floor, blew his whistle, acted as if he picked up a coin and put it his in pocket and then waved them in.

 

Good gesture.

I've seen it happen several times. It shows the good side of officials.

As others have mentioned, any official with a sense of awareness will do this. One of many little things that distinguishes a good official from an average one.

Had one tonight do basically the same thing, acting as though he was picking up something off the floor while hollering over to "get her in." Couldn't recall his name, but I remembered his face from 8th Region games back when I was in HS. Class move.

The only NoNo I have witnessed in this post-season in the switching of officials for the regional tournament. Watching the 11th region boys & girls tournament has shown how different the 16th region is from the 11th. The effort has been poor at best!

While sitting in the floor seats at the bank of Kentucky center during this game and witnessing this awesome gesture by the official, chames was shooting free throws and had a sub waiting to come in for him late in the game missed the second one and purposely in front of us told the ref to call a foul on him as he grabbed the players jersey so his teammate could enter the game goes to show how close a team can be!

I believe I saw this occur earlier this year (different official), and I swear he didn't even bother to fake an excuse. He simply blew the whistle, motioned for the subs to come in, and then put the ball back in play.

 

When game is in hand, you will often see coaches get the officials attention and give the "hand signal" for "switch 'em out" or "rotate"…kind of like volleyball. Not uncommon for an official to hit whistle and wave players in. Not in the rule book, but still ok….have to remember who these games are about….even the kids on the end of the bench practice hard.

I think the responsibility to stop the game falls on the coach and/or players, but I don't really have a problem with the official doing it.

I don't recall seeing this ever happen as a player but have seen it a ton recently. I don't have an issue with it if it's not impacting the results of a game.

Same here. The game has never been in doubt and usually there are several kids at the table trying to check in. Most refs around here will just blow the whistle (obviously not on a fast break) and pull the subs in quickly. I've never seen it done with more than 1:00 or 1:15 left in the game. Nice gesture all around.
