Its fun seeing all the posts about who folks think will win the 9th this year. Some have picked some big underdogs (maybe in jest, maybe out of loyalty, maybe just hopeful...), but this got me to wondering what team was the biggest surprise winning the 9th region?

I think you would have to include Highlands in 2001(?). If there had been seeding my memory tells me HHS would have been no higher than 5th. Conner made a nice run knocking off (I think) CCH and NCC before HHS beat them in OT in the finals.

Looking back the past 10-15 years, the only team that comes to mind is Ryle in 2002. They had one of the best players in the region (Justin Doellman), but he was only a junior and didn't receive the notoriety that his colleagues (i.e. Ross Neltner & Brock) received. I wouldn't call them a Cinderella, but very few (if any) picked them to win the region.

Yup, Conner beat CCH at Holmes in the 1st round. CCH had the ball out of bounds and turned it over on an errant inbounds pass which sealed the deal for the Cougars.

Was it Newport over Holmes a few years ago (when Sherwin's guy was at Newport)?

My son and I sat in the front row at BOK for that game, during warmups I said Holmes is going to blow them out, Holmes looked like a college team and Newport seemed to be outmanned at every position.

Newport punched Holmes in the mouth from the start. They got into Elijah Pittman's (I believe 4 pts ) head early and often. Has to be towards the top of the list.

Would the 2003 St. Henry team be considered one? I can't remember what they were ranked throughout the year, but they came out of the 9th that had Doellman, Neltner, and Brock all in their senior year, with a strong Dixie team as well.

This. Newport had no business beating this team, and by 20+......Holy :poop:

We are going old school on this one, the 1983 Highland Bluebirds. I know it sounds absurd with a team that consisted of Willie Schlarman, Jeff Kremar, and a young Scott Draud. If you are old enough to remember, NC (not yet NCC) had Sandfoss, Pangallo and Freppon and Lloyd had Stenzel, Kunkel and Chevalier. They were 1 and 1a going into region tourney.

Mr.Shields got his team hot at the right time, upset NC in the semi's and took Lloyd down in finals. Maybe not Cinderalla but worth mentioning.

That St. Henry team wasn't ranked #1, but they were a very good team. I don't think anyone was too surprised when they won the region.

Scott HS in the late '80's in their only state appearance. Believe they were well under .500 heading into districts and I think were only at .500 after running off 5-6 wins to win region?

I would have to say Newport in 2010. Got drilled in the District Final by NCC on Newport's home floor but then went out and put together 3 games in the Regional. And going into the Regional Final not many still gave them any chance.

I am going even older school with the 1949 Bellevue High School Tigers
