Biggest Cinderella to win 9th Region?

Featured Replies

A few off the top of my head.

Simon Kenton in 95

Boone County in 96

Highlands in 01

Newport in 10

The '95 SK team was a load, they finished 29-5.

Scott HS in the late '80's in their only state appearance. Believe they were well under .500 heading into districts and I think were only at .500 after running off 5-6 wins to win region?

'89.

Newport's had a pretty special run and I doubt anyone thougth they had a chance to win three regional games after getting hammered by NCC. They beat a pretty good Holmes team.

The boone team in 96 or the recent Newport win have to be top two.

Yea I don't see that as a huge upset that were #3 in region weren't they ?

I would say Scott HS in 1989 would be hard to top. I think going into that district tournament they were below .500. They ended up winning three games to advance to the region as district champs.

I believe the story is that they had not beaten any of the region teams that year other than Campbell County, but hadn't faced Bellevue. I remember them getting to the finals and played Holy Cross who had a terrific team and the day before had just beaten Holmes in one of the best region games I had ever seen. That game had like a 93-92 final score. Scott had a freshman that was really good and got their only dunk of the season to seal the region final against Holy Cross.

I was going off the top of my head, and this one stood out. Didn't realize they had that good of a record.

Seems I remember Holy Cross and CovCath entering the tournament as clearly the teams to beat. Maybe I'm putting more into this one, because this senior class lost Harney to Holy Cross entering high school, making a regional title in 95 seem pretty unlikely at that time.

I missed this one. Hard to top their 89 run for unlikely scenerios.

Going strictly off of memory here, but it seems Holy Cross and Holmes were both really good, but were both playing a lot of young kids. Conner was also good that year, but they were playing sophs along with a few upperclassmen.

If I remember correctly, Scott did have a pretty experienced group surrounding the freshman Haynes. Seems like they had a set of twins who were seniors , and of course Pelfrey was a senior on this team.
