Many Kentucky football fans have complained for years that Kentucky high schools produce more talent than is recognized by the four recruiting services. Granted, Kentucky doesn’t have the population size to warrant a lot of attention, but there is talent in the Bluegrass State.

 

Louisville Trinity and the northern Kentucky schools, like Ft. Thomas Highlands, have figured out that there are certain things you must do to gain recognition for their players. I am using these two schools as prime examples for getting media and recruiting attention because both realize that scheduling is something that puts the school's name out into the public eye. Both cross the river and play teams in the Cincinnati and Hamilton County area of Ohio.

Before all the media, social/internet, etc, both schools were winning and piling up State Championships as their records suggest. Back in the day when newspapers and local news broadcasts were the only method of following a team they both were always hitting the headlines locally and again it was because of winning.

 

Before mainstream media they built their programs gradually but since the new age they have both taken their programs to another level and have done it quickly because of live tv games etc which now can be viewed nationally not just locally. It has resulted in hundreds of college scholarships, coaches being named national coaches of the yr and just recently as we all know Trinity claimed a National Championship to its record.

 

Unofortunately it will be very difficult for other teams from the bluegrass not named Trinity, HHS, St X, Bowling Green and a handful of others to garner the attention that these teams have accomplished simply because of how long it has taken them to build their presence in KY.

 

But with the emergence of Trinity and HHS on the national scene it certainly helps the bluegrass state as a whole and will open doors for the other programs to follow if they choose to do so.

 

Nothing is keeping teams in KY big or small from reaching out to neighboring states for games whether it is for logistic reasons, financial reasons or to try and exploit their programs and garner national attention. JMO

I have to give KYMSFA credit for broadening the understanding of the process for parents, players and coaches at the younger levels. It gets people from a wide part of the state thinking earlier in the process. Hat tip to Plantmanky and others on that organization.

 

Also, Trinity's national exposure and the ESPN games at LexCath, Trinity and Highlands have to help exposure.

 

Kentucky had 2 kids in the US Army All-American bowl this year. Usually there has been only one representative. It may be a small data point but it shows that the state is moving in the right direction.

I disagree whole heartedly with the theory that high schools must do things to create recognition for players. If a kid can play, he can play. It doesn't matter what high school he attends. The key is getting the kid to camps where he is going to go head to head with top National talent, having a very supportive HS Coach and a tremendous work ethic. Once he proves himself against the best of the best, then he will get recognition by the Big 4 recruiting services and the offers will flow. You do NOT have to attend Trinity or Highlands to get a scholarship.

Do we know if there are schools that have contacted HHS players due to them being on ESPN?

Let's just look at the last 2 Mr Footballs in the state.

 

James Quick from Trinity last year. Does anyone think if he didn't play for Trinity he wouldn't of gotten a D1 scholarship?

This year N Fant, played for BG. Does anyone think if he didn't play for BG he wouldn't be playing at a D1 college next year?

 

Just like what has already been said, talent will win out every time. Yes some players at schools not well known may not make the headlines in the weekend paper,must if they attend camps and are good they will be noticed.

Drew Barker, Conner High School, how many people outside this area has ever heard of Conner?

Lex Sowards from Ryle, not a nationally known school. Yet they are just a couple from NKY not attending HHS that got D1 scholarships.

 

What did they do? They got noticed at camps, not because of who they played for.

Takent will always be noticed if they get out there and work for it.

There are 6 players alone that played with my son starting in 1st grade all on the same pee wee team that are playing at the next level next year and not one of them went to HHS or Trinity.

Sounds like KY players are doing more of what it takes to get noticed. Don't see how it matters what school you attend except maybe on a more regional smaller college level who might not have the resources. Even then YouTube is out there.

They have, I know this for a fact. My nephew played a CBS game back in 2009 against Cinti St X and the amount of exposure he received and the other kids received from colleges after that game was incredible.

 

Now that 2009 team was pretty special and most of the kids would have been found and were already found but it certainly didn't hurt.

 

Plus when most of these games are televised nationally they usually do a very well documented segment on each schools locations and academic achievements and that is where it is all at imo.

 

And sadly yes, it is all about money even at the HS level. Example, recent KY hs buyouts.
