I know this is a big one due to circumstances but I don't think it's fair to single out Cordia. Should be all or none IMO

 

What do you mean single out Cordia? Who are you comparing it to? And it's this kid's fault he chose to do it the last game of the reg season. The KHSAA doesn't have the luxury of taking it's time. It's one and done time. With that said, I think the response from them was chicken scrat.

I think this hurts the perception of Cordia going forward, especially when it comes to any kid who plays there or is associated with them in the future. This will be an incident that people point to as a way of labeling any of the kids they might have try to enroll later or define the character of the kids there now. That isn't really fair to them, as Chapman is there teammate, but there isn't really anything like this that happened with anyone else (at least to my knowledge).

 

The punch was definitely uncalled for and is something that should not be tolerated, no matter how you slice it. Even if this was the perfect storm of events that led up to this, we might better understand why it happened, but still, it's just something that has no place in the game. The situation could have ended much worse than it did, but thankfully, that didn't happen.

I noticed on the master list that there have been multiple ejections and suspensions this season in various sports , including basketball. I don't recall seeing any other press releases about any other incidents. I guess I'm just wondering why this one deserved a press release but the others didn't? Timing? Because there's video out there publicly? Just curious

If it was up to me players on any sports team who punches someone like that should be taken out of the gym in cuffs! No need for that garbage!

Rhodes needs to be let go.

I know that I'm seen as one of the biggest Cordia apologists on here, but I saw the punch video from Cordia and that it was posted on here, then wondered, "how many of these reactions are the same to the Montgomery County/Covington Catholic incident last year"? I'm not saying anyone is inconsistent at all, just saying that it is one of the first things that crossed my mind.

 

Regardless, I think that Justin Johnson is a kid who is very emotional as far as how he conducts himself when playing and could stand to tone down some. See him make a big play, you'll see him waving his arms, yelling, etc. Not saying anything is wrong with that, just that it's my observation. I'd rather see a player confident in his abilities who acts like he's been there before; you play on the EYBL Circuit, so act like it. If you don't beat your chest when you play Houston Hoops, then don't do it against Prestonsburg. If you don't believe me when I say that, check this video:

 

 

 

Now, all that said, Chapman had no right to try and drop him with a punch while he wasn't looking. No way, no excuse for that-- point blank, period. IF Johnson hit him with an elbow AND said something to him that would make us understand why he got so caught up in the moment (and both are still kids), still. Maybe that helps me understand WHY Chapman might have been so upset, but it in no way condones his actions as far as I'm concerned. Just a sad situation all around and thankfully one that could have turned out worse but didn't.

 

Hopefully Chapman learns from this, grows, and becomes a better person because he's obviously a talent that has a future playing basketball at the next level if he wants to take hold of that, but these kinds of things can't keep happening.

When did you think you'd ever see a black head coach in the 14th who played for UK and had NBA experience, much less at Cordia? This is someone whose brought something to the Cordia community that they otherwise wouldn't have because each believed in each other.

 

I don't think that this is an indictment of Rhodes and is an incident that could have happened at a number of schools.

 

Not trying to justify what's went on, but I've seen an 11th Region game where a Mr. Basketball candidate was punched in the back of the head, worse than this (it was in the middle of play), and there wasn't even a foul called. That wasn't an incident because it wasn't caught on camera and no one thought much more of it.

 

The spotlight is definitely on Cordia, but I don't think one act, even a negative one like this, by a kid in the heat of the moment is an indictment of some type of systematic failure at Cordia. If we aren't saying fire the Superintendent and Principals at Knott County Central when the kind of stuff that was going on last year was occurring, then let's not have such a quick trigger on Rhodes.

 

Now, if you don't think he's abiding by the rules on transfers, well, there's quite a few more folks in the State we might paint with that brush.

I have never replied to threads on this site...just enjoyed reading them but felt like I needed to say something about this subject. I was at the game and Johnson was playing a very physical game that night. There was pushing, elbows thrown, and jawing all night! I personally remember

screaming at the refs to call something and nothing was ever called! I also remember two instances where after Johnson made a basket/dunk and as he was running off turned to a Cordia player and said something...should have been T'd but he wasn't! Also have seen video of him throwing an elbow and then shoving a Cordia player and it was not called. I'm saying all of this, not to demonize Johnson, but to let you know what type of game was being played. I think some people have tried to portray the incident as "out of the blue", as if Chapman just picked a player and decided to clock him. This was not the case. It had been building up all game! Both received a warning earlier and Chapman even told one ref that," you had better stop him". With that being said, Johnson did not deserve to be clocked!!!! Chapman should have kept his cool! I hope that he has learned that what he has done is not acceptable! For what its worth, he felt terrible after the game and has tried to call Johnson. He couldn't reach him but has sent a text. Not sure what all was said but I was told he said that Johnson owed him one.

 

Please don't take what I said above as an attempt to paint Johnson as the bad guy because he wasn't. Being physical is part of the game and some games are played more aggressively. There was a lot of pressure on both these teams to win because it was a big game. And Johnson has a lot of pressure put on him to be physical and aggressive! I've heard people criticize Johnson after certain games saying he was too "soft". I've also heard people use "soft" to describe Cordia's whole team! So, if people put pressure on these kids to be more "aggressive", it will result in more fights because these are KIDS!!! Kids who make bad judgments and have trouble controlling their emotions. I'm not saying this to downplay what happened, I just want people to see that Chapman is not a monster and hope that people will not judge him from the horrible choice that he made.

I've also heard many PCC students take up for Cordia when people start their "recruiting" garbage! I've talked to some Cordia players and they said they hated that it happened too because they thought Johnson was "cool". They also went on to talk about what a good player he was and that he deserved to get 14th region player of the year. There are some people that are using what happened to turn this into a whole Cordia/PCC thing and to feed the anti-Cordia sentiment and I think its a shame! It'll only make things worse next time these boys play which, could possibly be in the region. This is something that happened between Chapman and Johnson so lets let them resolve it! Hopefully these two can talk or already have talked and be on good terms so, the next time they play it'll be a good clean game. But if people keep feeding this, it could be dangerous!! It's the kids that have to play the game and its our job as adults to make it a safe environment for them. So everybody just needs to chill!!
