These ref things drive me crazy. Kids should just play the game and let the coaches handle it. I know kids are emotional and sometimes just lose it or get frustrated. It happens. The best officials in handling these things pull the kid to the side and talk to him/her and give them an opportunity to correct it. I wasn't there so I don't know if that was done or not.

 

It does concern me when officials challenge and sometimes confront the kids. That usually ends up bad for the player. Fortunately, most don't do that. I know they can, but it is unnecessary.

 

When I was an Asst. Principal at a NKY HS in the early 90's, and would stand on the floor supervising students, I only had one official out of bounds. I witnessed and heard him cuss out a kid (who did do something stupid), it was uncalled for. I told him it was his last time officiating our kids if I had a say because that would not be tolerated. He then cussed me out. I reported it and he never was back as long as I was there. One in the dozens upon dozens is not too bad. Most were very respectful to the kids. It does happen, though.

I really dont see what everyone's issue is with a kid staring after a call. Would you rather see the kid throw his arms up and yell in disbelief like I've seen some of the other "highly touted" kids do in this region???

 

I've seen players from Newcath, Covcath, Ryle, Conner, Dixie, Boone, and yes even Holmes react much worse than simply giving the ref a look. Over reaction by a lot of you, IMO.

 

Just because you see a kid 2 times and he gives the ref a look once or twice a game after a call doesn't mean that is his "MO" every game. I spoke with a couple assistants at the gym earlier and they laughed at the stuff being said in this thread.

 

I will give you that Walter...I am only going off of what I saw that night and it was pretty blatant. I understand the kid has swag and is very good but like I said before, he will get much more respect from the refs/fans/etc if he just tosses the ball to the ref and goes on his way. Not saying kids shouldnt show a little emotion but just move on.

 

Maybe labeling it as his M.O was a little strong. Great player and a lot of kids look up to him, even from Ft. Thomas. I heard a ton of my stepson's friends talking about how good he was and such.

Walter did you really call out a specific ref in this thread. Imply that he will be "scratched" by the Bulldogs next year. I'm reading into these posts that you think he is in some way biased? Please tell me I'm reading this wrong.

I'm making no implications as I'm not a coach for Holmes nor do I have any input on decisions like that....next time you see me at a game (not hard to find, just look for the guy on the baseline with a camera), stop by before or after. I'd be more than willing to share my thoughts with you.

 

The ref in question has nothing to do with THIS GAME, so I'll make no other comments about him or his calls in this thread.

I said this in another thread about a player staring down an official is no big deal...

 

If the player isn't saying something deragatory to the official and is only staring them down, then the officials job is to turn away and not worry about it. Coaches stare down officials and officials stare down players and coaches all the time. Not a big deal IMO
