Game Cancellations - 2/4/14

Featured Replies

From Fayette Co. Public Schools website:

Tuesday, February 04, 2014

All afterschool and evening activities are canceled Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014

Just seems like sometimes they pull the trigger too fast,,,maybe publish a delay first..

Grayson County at Collins is canceled as well as Frankfort at Shelby County.

GRC at Anderson Co canceled.

Kenton County needs to divide into a Southern/Northern split to help avoid unnecessary cancellations for the northern part of Kenton when it is really only bad for the southern parts.

Lawnboy13, you usually make some great comments on here, but to call the BCBOE idiotic is a bit tough. Yes, there were times when the roads in most places were clear later in the day, but when your making a decision for an entire district, all it takes is for one child living out in the Boonies to be injured due to road conditions and then thousands of fingers are pointed back at the BCBOE for forcing a child (not an experienced FED EX Driver :thumb:) to drive in those conditions. I don't believe it to be idiotic, just trying to do the right thing.

That's 100% true. Those who occupy the seat that must decide whether or not to put these kids on the road (sometimes in the very EARLY a.m.) have a difficult task. I would not want to be in their shoes.

I have no problem with child safety, however, my contention is that they rush to judgement with their decisions on too many occasions, you can't live in fear of being sued.

One glaring example of this lunacy.......Highlands @ Boone Co. Saturday Jan. 25. Game was nixed of Friday when they were calling for 2-3 inches overnight on Friday ending before daybreak and Saturday temps 40 and SUNNY!!!! By Noon every road between Ft. Thomas & Florence were absent of snow.

Did it for 4 years and was blasted by someone every time. Always conservative in these matters. The problem is canceling late activities on a snow day when roads do clear. Always was wrong either way on it. Just do what's best for the kids' safety and move on.

I get it, but sometimes I think they rush the call.

I failed to mention the no school/no game policy.

Boone does not have such a policy.

Kids safety was always the primary factor and most people do get it. There were other factors. High school kids drivng in the stuff (they weren't very careful when conditiond were perfect),, can the teachers get there, sometimes teachers and staff do not live in the same district or county. You have to have enough people to at least supervise. Finally, public schools in Kentucky get the majority of their funding for student attendance. If only 65% of the kids show up, you lose $$. You do get to drop your lowest 5 days attendance or used to. Still the flu can cause that besides weather, etc. Private schools don't have that, which makes a difference in public systems.

Still the call is made primarily on safety, as it should be.

All games in the Bourbon City area were cancelled. They're hoping to play the Washington Co. @ Thomas Nelson game tomorrow night, and the Bardstown @ Bethlehem game is bumped to next Tuesday.

Another issue is things get rural pretty quick in Boone and Kenton County. While the majority of the main roads may be fine, oftentimes, the side streets (many of which are hilly) remain a big problem. The school board is in a no win situation. At least when they err on the side of caution and call things off prematurely, no one gets hurt. You make a mistake the other way, and there are big problems.

Add softball to that list.
