That element provides evidence that he wasn't fully appreciated because he was black. There are plenty of UK fans who could not stand Tubby and even UK for hiring Tubby. I agree with LRCW that he'd have been given more of a pass had he been white.

I don't think that anyone is arguing that there weren't people like that.

I just think that it's kind of overstated because the people who were like that were so vocal and stood out because of the message.

Most UK fans loved Tubby when he was winning. Most fans soured on him when he wasn't winning.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't recall Coach Hall getting hate mail or death threats.

Actually he did get hate mail. Probably some death threats but can't recall for sure. But hate? Absolutely. What Joe B. got was his former boss still having a TV show and an office in Memorial while he was trying to coach the current squad.

What Joe B. got after his 2nd season (13-13 with injuries) was a "You'd better win now" from his administration. Luckily, they did.

What Joe B. got was "You're not Rupp," "Why are you playing so many Black players?" and "You only won ONE National Title."

Not trying to compare but if you don't think Hall had it rough, you are probably too young to comment.

I don't think anyone is going to argue that Tubby had failed in the recruiting department the last 3 years or so. The fact remains there are still a majority that never want to give Tubby credit for the great job he did for several years at Kentucky, including not giving Tubby any credit for the 98 Championship. People still want to give Rick credit for that, and the main reason is because Tubby is black. It's sad, but it's true.

I agree with this. I never felt that Rick's style of handling the players would have worked with the '98 team. Tubby's did.

After thinking about this some more, I think this is a better way to state my feelings:

I don't think that the powers that be in the university with the power to hire and fire Tubby actually took the opinions of racist fans into account when it came to hiring and firing the coach.

I don't think that when it comes to big money boosters, etc. there was the kind of ignorance that you'd associate with that kind of racism.

Tubby = Phil Fulmer. Timing and everything.

Guess UT fans hated white guys?

Maybe... but... first ever loss to Vandy in Rupp (IIRC) and school record Final Four drought under his watch. Let's not act like it was rainbows and butterflies.

Also... he wasn't fired from UK. He resigned for the Minnesota job (which he WAS fired from).

This might be the most diverse game thread I've ever read in regards to the direction the conversation has gone throughout.

No senior leadership.

It's simply no leadership period. It doesn't have to come from a senior.

MKG, Davis, Knight, those guys were leaders as freshman.
