January 22, 201412 yr Actually what I find most remarkable is that the most teams any conference has had to win a title is 3. In contrast, the BCS in the past 13 years had 5 teams from a single conference win a title.
January 22, 201412 yr Duke, Kentucky, Carolina, & Kansas get most of the College Basketball attention, but looking at this list reminds me how strong of a program Jim Calhoun had at Connecticut. I can't stand that guy, but he was as good a coach as anyone in the last 20 years.
January 22, 201412 yr The easy answer (though maybe not so easy for the SEC cheerleaders) is that conferences don't win titles, teams do. Still something that is interesting, especially since everyone considers the SEC a football conference.

Yeah and he built that program from nothing and then had to take a backseat to the women's team...I don't like him either but what he did was pretty awesome.

Having said that, if you take this list back to 1990 the ACC is going to make a huge jump because Duke won in 1991 & 1992, then Carolina won in 1993.

January 22, 201412 yr 1990-Present: ACC- 8 (Duke- 4, North Carolina- 3, Maryland- 1) SEC- 6 (Kentucky- 3, Florida, 2, Arkansas- 1) Big East- 5 (Connecticut- 3, Louisville- 1, Syracuse- 1) Pac 10- 2 (Arizona- 1, UCLA- 1) Big 12- 1 (Kansas- 1) Big 10- 1 (Michigan State- 1) Big West- 1 (UNLV-1)
January 22, 201412 yr Still something that is interesting, especially since everyone considers the SEC a football conference. And so it is. UK and UF are outstanding programs; that fact is reflected in their combined count of national titles. It says little about the SEC, which outside of those two is decidedly mediocre as a league.
January 22, 201412 yr Author Back to the original thought. I remember living in Indiana during the 90's and hearing about Big 10 Basketball everyday from someone. They talked about how great the conference was. Point being that the conference was so evenly matched that anyone could win on any night, my reply was always, "Mass Mediocrity didn't equal Greatness" because none of those teams ever seemed to do much in the tourney except for the Fab 5 for two seasons.

That's why he went back 20 years. 20 is a better 'random' number to go back to than 24. Nevermind that it helps his rooting cause. Just to back to 1980 or 1985.

It says little about the SEC, which outside of those two is decidedly mediocre as a league. Same could be said about ACC with Duke and Carolina...without them where would you rank that league? Only had Maryland twice and Ga Tech once make Final four in last 20 years from that league

I always go back to 1990 just because it's easier. And I also think that's sort of when College Basketball took off. The 3-point line had made it a more up-tempo game, plus that's around the time Duke became the power it remains. And I don't say this to troll, but Duke gave a reason for people to watch because so many hate them.
