January 21, 201412 yr This day is a sad day for me as people pull out their 'favorite' MLK quote and put it on Facebook and get 123 likes. People go to their marches and parades to celebrate the life of an iconic man who made serious headway in the civil rights movement. For 24 hours(about 12 hours really but who's counting) we celebrate one of the greatest human beings ever on the face of this planet and then tomorrow we go back to ignoring everything he taught us and everything he stood for and we remain the stagnant society we are. I'd rather argue about Richard Sherman than go back to Facebook and watch the hypocrisy. Sad day indeed. I agree, but it happens unfortunatley a lot in different manners. Lincoln's Birthday is celebrated as Presidents day, yet the same thing happens. People don't really carry on what he stood for but the same will claim how he was one of the best Presidents ever. Other holidays have the same affect also. Christmas for example and as soon as it's over the hate comes right back out and the treating of others horribly is what you see on the news again. It is sad, but true.

I believe that President's Day should be as sacred or even more so than MLK Day. Really don't understand why MLK Day takes rank over Presidents Day. It's not worth the endless discussions with Jesse and Al that would take place ad nauseum.

January 21, 201412 yr When I was in middle school we didn't get out for MLK's birthday. I do remember however the school having an assembly for blacks only. I never understood that. I'm glad now that it is a national holiday. Very few people had the impact on our history that he did. He should be honored and celebrated. I think the same should be done for Lincoln. If it wasn't for what Lincoln did MLK might not have had the opportunity to do what he did.

January 21, 201412 yr Can someone explain to me why all the schools are closed on MLK day? Perfect opportunity to teach our youth about many different issues on this day but instead we send them home to the xbox all day, never understand this. One church, here in our city, offered a learning event for 2 hours for young people. They were given extra credit in a certain class to attend. It was planned as an event to understand the Civil Rights struggle and the role of leaders like MLK in that journey.

I don't know that it ranks over it, but President's Day also used to be two different days and were combined for convenience. Same is true for VA who combined a state holiday (Lee-Jackson day) and MLK (a Federal Holiday). For those unaware, it was signed into a Federal Holiday by Ronald Reagan.

I just thought you had a beef with the Holiday. Hypocrites walk among us and I'm guilty of being one sometimes myself. It's kind of like the WWJD slogan. We can only strive to live by the good ideas people put out there, but we all will slip up at some point.

He was a man with great leadership skills in a time of great conflict, he espoused standing up for one's rights, but in non-violent demonstrations. He wasn't perfect nor would I expect him to be. He wasn't perfect nor would I expect him to be. Many honor him because he was a great black leader...many of us choose to honor him because he was a great American! "Woodsrider" started his post with "Welcome to America the land of the hypocrites" which reminded me of this song. I posted it to associate it with his comment. PurplePride started the thread related to how hypocritical it was for people to post positive MLK stuff on Facebook and then turn around and go back to not being so nice. I prefaced my song post with how his comment reminded me of the song, and how my brain works in song, and thought that in some respects that it applied to what had been said previously in the thread. I'm very happy to be living in America and personally was not trying to put it down with being topical to the thread. I don't however think that the Violent Femmes were completely wrong in the things that they said in the song. They painted a sometimes hard to digest truth about America. I completely agree and echo your words about MLK. I don't think that I could have said it any better than you did.
