January 15, 201412 yr Author Putting the ball in play on a sideline/baseline is MUCH faster than getting your jumpers lined up going the right direction, all the other players in proper position and having to "referee" all the action that could potentially happen during a jump ball. Just my opinion as a former official. So what are we talking, an additional 1 minute of real time?
January 15, 201412 yr So what are we talking, an additional 1 minute of real time? I grew up in the era of "Jump Ball." The real reason for going to "alternate possession" was that refs may not throw the ball up "fairly" (lean one side or the other on the toss) and in the mind of NCAA the "alternate possession" was more "fair." Just telling you the excuse back then.

January 15, 201412 yr So the NCAA has been dumb from the onset. Good to know. :lol2: Actually the "Alternate Possession" only came about somewhere after the '80 season at least. I recall a specific 5 second call "Jump Ball" with Sam Bowie and Greg Cook that led to a UK win. So it was sometime after that season.
January 15, 201412 yr If I was a referee I'd never call a charge. Ever. Even if the offensive player ran over the defender with a truck, I'd still call a block. I'm the opposite if players are going to give up their body and are set then it should be a charge.
January 15, 201412 yr I'm the opposite if players are going to give up their body and are set then it should be a charge. I don't see it as giving up their body. I see it as "Hey, my teammate who was guarding you couldn't defend you, so we'll just step in front of you because that's the only way we can stop you" defense.

I see it as "Hey, my teammate who was guarding you couldn't defend you, so we'll just step in front of you because that's the only way we can stop you" defense. I see it as team defense. Sliding over to help your teammate on defense when he/she needs it.
January 15, 201412 yr So what are we talking, an additional 1 minute of real time? I'd say that's pretty close. Too much "down" time in my opinion though. To me it's like icing in hockey. I'm not a hockey fan, but that time where the officials have to get the puck, go line up the players and then drop the puck is down time that is taken care of in hockey by loud rock music and a couple sips of your beer. I don't think that's down time that basketball fans are looking for. Hatz makes a great point too. The team that doesn't get the tip is going to look at the official that tossed it and blame it on him sometimes.
January 15, 201412 yr Do away with the 1 and done....although that is more on the NBA than college. I wish it was like Football or even Baseball for D1 athletes. 3 years then you can go pro. The concept of limiting an adult's ability to make money makes my stomach hurt. To paraphrase Colin Cowherd, the outrage over one and done players is a "you" (plural Hellbird, not YOU) problem, not a "them" problem. If a computer savant can leave MIT to make a million dollars in Silicon Valley after his freshman year, why can't Johnny Highjumper?
January 15, 201412 yr I see it as team defense. Sliding over to help your teammate on defense when he/she needs it. It is team defense, no doubt. I just prefer advantages be given to offensive players.
January 15, 201412 yr It is team defense, no doubt. I just prefer advantages be given to offensive players. They are trying to do that this year with the handchecks but that has went bad. Inconsistent from game to game and from half to half.
January 15, 201412 yr ...... The problem with a thread like this (and I love the concept of it), is people think of college basketball as the top 50 or so programs in America. I don't want to see NJIT or Kennesaw St. try to run an offense in 24 seconds. Could Creighton get good looks in 24 seconds? Sure. Probably in 2.4 seconds. That isn't everyone. The shot clock, in my opinion, is right where it should be. Same with the three-point line. I'd leave jump ball as is as well. The only rule I'd change tomorrow, if I was the hoops czar, would be widening of the lane. That has to happen, in my opinion.
January 15, 201412 yr The only time I am for a charge is if the ball handler runs over the defender while the defender is so still it looks as if he isn't breathing. If the offensive player has left his feet then it is a block IMO.

January 15, 201412 yr They are trying to do that this year with the handchecks but that has went bad. Inconsistent from game to game and from half to half. I think the handchecks will be fixed in time as players adjust to the whistle. But the whistle has to be consistent for those adjustments to be made.
