I've never been to Murray, and I've only driven through Danville. Anyone care to tell me what to do if I visit either of those? I'm always looking for interesting weekend trips.

I'm sold. But now I have to find something for my wife to do while I'm hanging with you two.

Personally I'm not a fan of living in a small town but it's cool that these three are listed in the top five. Having visited them it doesn't surprise me that they are that high as they are all beautiful communities with great people.

I moved to the Danville area around 1998 and I'll always have a home here even after retirement. Especially now that it is wet.

As far as Murray goes...well...it's not so much what there is to do there as much as it's just a good, quality nice town with a good college in the middle of it. Low crime rate, clean, low cost of living and right next to the WKY lakes region so lots of options for boating and fishing in the spring/summer months. It really is God's country.

 

Hazel KY is just south of there for great antique shopping if you/wife into that sort of thing. Usually always something going on around the campus, be it an athletic event, concert, visiting speakers, etc. They are now wet so can get a drink with your meal if you go to a place that serves. Several good, local eating establishments. I'm all about Martha's, a home cooking joint that has great plate lunches and the best homemade pie you ever got from a restaurant. Not far from Paducah which is a thriving WKY river town with a growing downtown arts district and always something going on. Good bbq joints there as well.

 

If someone was looking for a place with a big night life and tons of options, Murray might be a little boring cause that's not what it is. But looking for a good quality of life setting, it's all over that.

Murray is unique because of the University and proximity to Kentucky Lake. While a smaller town (17,741 city population, little over 37,000 county wide), MSU has around 10,000+ students. So the pace around the community is still a little slow, but it has a progressive feel about it. The University is very attractive to walk through. We get compliments for that alone by people across the country. The basketball team has the support of a mini-UK. Incredible town support and a lot of fun to attend. The summer time has a lot of visitors that go to the lake and rent boats and/or cabins for the weekend though that is technically outside of Murray. Murray is also a solid walkable community, especially compared to contemporary communities of this size. About 10 miles of sidewalk has been added over the past decade I would say, including 4 miles this past year. Murray Kentucky Convention and Visitor's Bureau is your Calloway County and Kentucky Lake area source for lodging listings, dining listings, event listings, attraction listings and more. Murray Kentucky is home to Freedom Fest, Squealing on the Squar

The best times to come are probably during the Brass Band Festival, the BBQ Festival and Octoberfest. Octoberfest is a one day thing but the other two are weekend events. I think Danville is at its best in those times.

 

Boyle County/Danville football and basketball games are also can't miss events.

Land between the lakes, a wonderful Parish in St. Leo's that members go out of their way to make you really feel welcome and the friendliest and kindest people you want to meet any where. Small town America in every sense of the word and loved that my daughter went to school at Murray State and she and we enjoyed her time their.

You may not be aware, but last year a new alcohol ordinance passed and package liquor is now sold in Murray. Some places are open until 1:30 now. Paducah is awesome, btw. I love their downtown area.

Nope, did not know that. I was down this past June for a funeral...Mr. Gearl Suiter, well known older gentleman and big supporter of Murray State basketball, you may have known him. He was a mentor for me here at work when I first started. Anyway I try to get back down that way a couple of times a year if I can, work usually has me traveling somewhere near the area and try to get there when/if I can. It still feels a little like home.

 

I enjoyed immensely the time I spent/lived there and was really saddened when I moved away in 1995. Though I like where I currently live, it's no Murray for sure.
