Highlands plays in the small School conference in Bowling and you have 800 kids, that is not a Small School.

You know what happens when people get bored? They call in bomb threats to their high school. Hmmmm.....Where were you at 7am?

Was there a bomb threat at HHS?

I know nothing!

Do we win? That doesn't seem fair.

Not sure what you have against the All A, but I do agree with some of your points. But I say let them play. It's not hurting anything to have this tournament. Except it may make the KHSAA nervous if others want to segment out tournaments by classes.

Didnt realize this was a post season tournment. Is this a state tournament or just a tournament? Because if it's a state tournament, why don't we have it at all classes? Why separate them if we agree that the top teams in this tournament can compete with all the other regional teams anyway? Kinda like double dippin isn't it? Well if you don't win the A, you have a shot at the region. I wish my daughter had two chances and one was against schools only her size.

If it's not a state tournament, then what's all the hype?? Just another tournanment that is segmented from the rest of the state...just like every other tournament.

I have no problem with Brossart and NCC being good every year. Great programs! But in my opinion, this is just a money maker for someone. People will use the argument, "this is for the small schools". Well the ones that win in this tournament have just as good of a chance in any tournament. It's hypocritical. It's not to provide opportunities for the teams that are small. It's for about 20% of the smaller enrollment teams in the state. That's it. And again, all those teams compete anyway.

And to someone's point about if you remove Brossart and NCC out of the tournament, there would be no crowd and revenue....Are you serious? You don't think that other teams would step up if they have a chance to be in the finals. Just replace those names with someone else. Are you saying noone would show up if Brossart and NCC didn't play. If they chose to not play one year, would they just cancel the tournament because it's not as special anymore? How arrogant! In fact, it may go up because the games may be more competitive and different teams would have a shot of advancing.

Oh where to start? You daughter can have 2 chances. Nothing stopping you from starting a 3A or 4A or All-Mid Size Tourney and organizing it and getting teams from every Region to participate.

So you say only 20% of the teams in it can compete? You do realize if you remove those 20% the next 20% would be just as dominant? In the 9th region for example if you remove say the teams that have won it in the last 10 years on the Boys and Girls side( NCC and Holy Cross) then St. Henry probably wins about every year. Take them out and Beechwood probably wins etc.

And yeah I'm saying that if you take out the better teams then yes attendance slides. That is a given because the better teams usually have a larger fan base. Let's say you take all the NKAC Division II schools from the 9th region All-A. No NCC, Newport, Lloyd, Beechwood, St. Henry, Holy Cross. I'm thinking that would have a significant effect on attendance.

KHSAA would never allow another tournament of this size. It would jeopardize their crown jewel of the sweet 16. They allow this one to keep the peace. And by the way, did you start the all A for your son or daughter? Why would you to expect me to start one for mine.

By the way, I'm not saying take away the top 20%. But, if you took away the top 20%, now you're not talking about teams that can compete for the regular region title as well. So you are making it an opportunity for schools that otherwise wouldn't have a chance to compete in the regular region. When you have NCC and Brossart who are probably favorites in their regions, why do you have them in a tourment that is segmented from others when they can clearly compete with any size school.

How do you know what effect removing Brossart and NCC would be. Yes, they both have a nice following. But I bet the other team's following isn't as strong when they are playing NCC because who wants to come out and watch NCC beat their team to death. But if two teams played each other where they both had a chance, maybe both sides would make up for the attendances lost by one dominate fan base. Like I said, it may make attendance go up, knowing the games will be competitive. For example, we all know who is going to win the ninth this year. Do you think attendance overall for the 9th region portion would be higher or lower if NCC wasn't in the tournmament. Take all the games into consideration. If they weren't in it, other teams would have a chance and that means that all the games would be more crowded. Why go out to see a game when you are 100% positive what the outcome of the tournament is going to be? Parents will be there, but no casual fans.

Just answer these questions. What is this segmented tournament for? What's it's intentions? Why do they segment out the teams and restrict entry?

It is for schools that are the smallest 120 (I believe that is the number) schools in the KHSAA. The intention is that almost all of those 120 schools do not have a chance to win the Sweet 16 so this is a tournament for those schools where they would have a better chance of winning.

Whether you like it or not there is not much of a chance for the smallest 120 schools to compete in the Sweet 16. Sure maybe a Brossart or NCC can compete for a Regional Championship but they are not winning a lot of them and they are not going to win 4 games in the Sweet 16. I think the last small school to win the Sweet 16 was Shelby Valley and not even sure they are small enough to be in the All-A anymore.

They limit it to 120 because the number has to be drawn somewhere. That number is large enough to have at least 4 teams in each region I believe and of course some regions (like the 9th) have many more than that.

I'm assuming this whole argument you are making is in jest or attempting to just drum up debate rcc9. For starters why is it a given NCC wins the 9th? Isn't Holy Cross in the All A 9th and isn't this the same team that held highlands to 0(zero) FGs in an entire half of basketball . 16 minutes without one single shot finding the net. Didn't Highlands beat NCC ? So why does Holy Cross have no chance? You seem to have a big problem with tourney but in same post you say I wish my daughters had. 2 chances at a title with one against schools her size. So you do want it or don't or do you only want it for your child? Brossart and NCC basically take every kid that comes out for basketball. Very rare do they ever cut . Both use 8th graders typically to field a freshmen team. If this doesn't say small school what does. Are they both good this year in both boys and girls, yes. Is this the automatic case every year that they are favorites for region, absolutely not. My advice if it bothers you that badly stop fighting move a couple miles and join one of them and enjoy the ride . Otherwise just don't read the paper that weekend and avoid the results. To the other small schools you say are just not good enough and getting left out, get better.

For the record, a lot of this is just for the debate to get you two teams that care about this tournament going. But you always seem to give me a lot to debate.

So you're talking about the HC team that held HHS to no FG's in the first half and still lost? I know you were taking a shot at the Bluebirds there, but that's not really a good example because they lost, even with holding them down like that. You would think if a decent team were to hold someone to 0 fgs in a half, they would have won going away. But they lost. And you're the one that said HHS had no chance against NCC and HHS beat HC, so why now are you using HC as an example of someone that could beat NCC. Kinda funny.

I want it for everyone's child. Only a third of the state gets to compete for a state title against schools their own size. Why? Why segment out just the smaller enrollment schools?

For the record, almost all bball teams these days are made up of underclassmen. HHS is in the same boat as NCC. Last year, there were only 3 freshman in the entire program and 2 of them started varsity and one played significant minutes. Who do you think was on HHS' freshman team last year. All 7th and 8th graders. The year before that, there were only 4. It's happens at all schools. Heck, even a big school like Boone was thinking of not having a freshman team because they didn't have the numbers either. I'm not sure if they ended up having one or not, but they were comtemplating it. Numbers are down at every school. Almost all schools have 7th and 8th graders in the mix these days. HHS' 6th man is a 7th grader.

As for the other small teams that need to get better...really? You want to compare NCC, Brossart, and HC to teams like Bellevue, Silver Grove, Dayton, Newport, Ludlow and Lloyd. C'mon, you know better than that. NCC has kids come from St Mary, St Joe, Holy Trinity, St Thomas, St Catherine, Southgate, Bellevue, Dayton, Newport, Ft Thomas, Camp Co school district (not sure about St Phillips and St Peter, Paul And some of those elementery's are big enough to have two teams! And the the majority of the kids that attend a Brossart or NCC have the family resources to get extra training or play AAU year round. Those other schools aren't blessed with families that can afford to do all that. And those other schools have one small elementery to pull kids from and your advice to them is get better? Really?

It is for schools that are the smallest 120 (I believe that is the number) schools in the KHSAA. The intention is that almost all of those 120 schools do not have a chance to win the Sweet 16 so this is a tournament for those schools where they would have a better chance of winning.

Well I did the research last year and just about every school that made it to the All A sweet 16, was also VERY competitive in their regional competition and just as much chance to win the regular region as the majority of the top teams in the region. If you look statewide, the regions in the A are won by almost the same teams every year. They are all just like Brossart and NCC where they can compete just like everyone else in their region. So in reality, out of those 120 teams, there are only about 35 teams that EVER make it to the A state tournament. So that means that 85 teams never have a chance and never have. And out of the 35 teams, almost all of them are very competitive within their regular region. So the argument that this is to provide an opportunity for teams that would never have a shot of making the real sweet 16 is a joke. The teams that are successful in the A are from programs that are already successful (or have the same chance as any size school) in the regular region. So why do we segment them out?

As far as small schools not being able to win a sweet 16, there are plenty of large schools that have never won it or even been there before. Should we create a tourmament for them? Heck, I'm not sure how long the girls sweet sixteen has been going on, but lets say 50 years. That means there have only been 50 winners and I'm sure there are repeat winners. But for the sake of argument, lets say 50 different winners. That means something like 260 schools or more have never won it. Should we create a tournament for them because they have never won the sweet 16 and may never have a shot?

My point, it's not easy for anyone of any size to win the sweet 16. Only a very small number of teams have won it. But for some reason we feel a need to separate the small schools and tell everyone this is their chance when in reality, there is a only a low percentage of teams that even have a shot at the A. And those teams have just as good a shot as any size school of winning the regular region. People that root for this tournament should be partitioning for classes in this state. I don't want that, but this tournament is an example of just that. Why make one class more special and provide more opportunities than any other class?

So what do the brackets look like at this point?

So what do the brackets look like at this point?

Well it looks like so far, NCC has played Villa and Heritage. Man, that's a shame. I know those two teams were really looking forward to having a shot at playing in the A sweet 16. Has Kiernan or Mayes even played in either game?

okay okay, I'm done. I really like Brossarts and NCC's teams and programs. I just can't stand the hypacritical stance around this tournament. "This is for the small schools". "This is circled on all the small schools schedules every year." "What an opportunity". No, it's for schools like Brossart and NCC across the state. Very competitive smaller programs. They are the only teams that look forward to it every year. Every once in a while one of the smaller or lesser program has a good class and might get excited, but for most years, it's just another game for two on their schedule because that's as far as they will ever go.
