January 6, 201412 yr Gregg Doyle on Dalton's post-game presser: Bengals QB Andy Dalton dodges his role in loss better than he does INTs - CBSSports.com Not what you like to hear from your QB.
January 6, 201412 yr Not what you like to hear from your QB. Andy sounds like he's got a future in politics?? "It's their fault"!!
January 6, 201412 yr I got to take this game in person but luckily didn't have to pay for a ticket. The defense gave up nearly 200 yards rushing but Brown got a big chunk of that on that last TD run. The defense played well enough to win with a competent offensive attack. The Chargers had it first and goal from the 3 and Bengal D held them to a FG. They had to fight field position on two other turnovers. Overall, they slipped some late in the year and part of that was teams started picking on Dre Kirkpatrick and eventually they finally missed Atkins on the DL. The offense...shoo wee. Jay Gruden still has too much of his arena football mentality and tries to get too cute at times and throws it too much. The Bengals are at their best when they are pretty balanced run/throw. They abandoned the run far too early. They should have ran BJGE more and he had a huge game the last time they played SD and if I recall SD is not that good against the run. First or second drive, they get a 3rd and one around midfield, early second quarter maybe. You run it plain and simple, but they try a little pass play out to Gio and it was a bad throw. Why make it complicated. Run it down their throats. The middle of the field never opened up for them. Turnovers... Gio's fumble was big. A chance to go up 7 at half and then get ball to start second half. Settle for 3. Chargers don't have to alter game plan much. Driving to around midfield and Dalton fumbles without getting hit. Killer. Back foot throw across field. Pick. Horrible read and throw into tight coverage on an out. Pick. Overall, I thought the defense started to wilt late in the year and they did play well enough to win today, but the offense was simply horrid and simply had too many turnovers. What do you do going forward? Their window is open, but for how much longer? Frankly, they are stuck with Dalton considering their draft position. Do you continue to add to the OL? LB? DB? Marvin Lewis? Is Mike Brown willing to do what the Reds did with Dusty and realize the coach has only been able to take them so far? What about Gruden? His stock fell big time after today and frankly I have not been all that impressed with him. What about Marvin Lewis
January 6, 201412 yr Author I did want to see James Harrison get a chance at post season success, but other than that, I had a feeling this was gonna happen. Easy to say after the fact I know, but still... I don't know if anyone who is a Bengals fan and hasn't committed a homicide in the past 4 years could really say the same, might be wrong though. January 6, 201412 yr Author So what do you do to fix it? I'm glad you finally realize same old same old doesn't get it. But what do you change? Me. 1st is whole coaching staff staff goes. Coaching staff doesn't matter if your owner (and/or ownership group) is only worried about the $$$ and what people are going to pay to see. As far as that goes, GM can only do so much with what he's given (payroll).
January 6, 201412 yr Author I agree. I'd let him play through his contract but if someone llike Manzel is there in the 1st I'd daft one in the 1st round. Doubt Manziel is there unless the Bengals trade up.
January 6, 201412 yr Author You have to give San Diego a lot of kudos. They had a plan that worked as long as they didn't get behind. Possess the ball by running it, throw lots of play action with a darn good QB and good receivers, and just not put it in harm's way. You know they had to think that Dalton would get careless eventually, as he did. It was on the tape. By playing the way they did, they limited the risk for turnovers greatly. They beat Denver the same way. They are one of those teams that plays to their competition. Well put.
January 6, 201412 yr Fire Marvin. Hire Zim. Let Dalton play out his contract, better players to sign long term this offseason.
January 6, 201412 yr I dont really feel like reading back through every thread. But I dont know if anyone raised this question. Whos more talented, the Bengals? Or the Colts? IMO the Colts are a lot less talented but have a superstar QB. He already has a playoff win while Dalton is 0-3... A competent QB makes a huge difference. The Bengals have proven you can have all the talent in the world but when the 1 guy that touches the ball every snap on offense is among the leagues worst you can only go so far and you will never win anything meaningful. It's not rocket science here folks. When they talk about on Mike and Mike this morning about Mark Sanchez being a better QB than Andy Dalton, well...they aren't wrong. Sanchez did afterall get to back to back AFCCG's. Dalton is horrible. 7 turnovers in the last 2 games. 6 int's, 3 fumbnles 1 lost fumble in his 3 post season games with a qb rating of 56 and a QBR of 17/ He is horrible. We could of had Jerry Rice at WR, Shannan Sharpe at TE and Barry Sanders in the backfield along with the 1988 Bengals O-Line and we stil would lose with Andy Dalton under center. Colts more talented overall? No, Colts a better chance at winning in the post season because of a actual NFL type QB...yes.
January 6, 201412 yr They also said everything the Gals ran they were prepared for an had faced. Gruden added no wrinkles. You have been against Dalton and Gruden from the beginning. However the Bengals each year with these two have gotten better on offense. The Bengals became a top 10 offense this year, so having a bad QB and a bad OC doesn't add up to become a top 10 offense. So its one or the other it is Dalton is not that good of a QB, or Gruden is over matched as an OC. An OC that is bad with a poor QB does not get better each year and become a top 10 offense. I am more in the thinking that poor QB play makes the plays look bad. When Dalton is on, it doesn't seem like people question any of the calls. Gruden has some questionable calls sometimes, however I think he is a better OC than we give him credit for but is brought down by QB play. I will add though that it is Gruden's own fault since he wanted Dalton. However for the most part I think his play calling is not as bad as people think, its bad QB play. We wouldn't be a top 10 offense with both a bad QB and bad OC it just doesn't add up.

Colts more talented overall? No, Colts a better chance at winning in the post season because of a actual NFL type QB...yes. I can't disagree. We said it before the year started the season would depend on Dalton. The talent is there, but bad QB play can kill a team especially in the playoffs. The Bengals have a lot more talent than the Colts, but they have a QB who can make their team better. Even though he had turnovers in his playoff game too, he was good enough to come back to make plays still to help win. Dalton can't overcome those things and make up for it when he makes mistakes like Luck.

We wouldn't be a top 10 offense with both a bad QB and bad OC it just doesn't add up. I have to disagree with you about Gruden. I think he tries to be too cute in his play calling and is still living in the arena football world where you have to throw downfield the majority of the time. Gruden fails miserably when it comes to what it takes to beat some teams. It's easy to beat bad teams with simply better talent and that is what the bengals can do. His problem is when you actually need to beat a good team by out coaching them. Instead he thinks his game plans that beat bad teams will work with every team. Yesterday he didn't change anything from last weeks game plan. We beat the Chargers last time by running the ball. Yesterday what did we start off doing really good? Running the ball. They ran the ball great and it couldn't be stopped. What does Gruden do? I think his ego gets the best if him and he is determined to make throwing the ball work. What happens? The team that was favored to win by the largest margin this weekend ends up losing by the biggest margin because Gruden goes against what was working and also goes with the weakest part of the offense and that is Dalton's arm.
January 7, 201412 yr Well 24 hours later and we can move on. Actually, I didn't stay down too long. Pretty obvious from the press conference today that we will have basically the same team next year. We should probably expect about the same results. The coordinators may be different, but that is not a sure thing. Zimmer will take Hue with him, if he goes, according to reports, if not and Gruden goes, we better snap up Hue quickly because he will be an OC with all the new coaches, if he doesn't get a HC himself. Regardless who the coordinators are, they will be good enough on both sides of the ball to make the playoffs most likely. Nothing leads me to believe they will win a playoff game, but I can always hope. Invested too many years following not to. I know I will be there in the stadium next year. Can't help it.
