Really wanted him to sign with the Cubbies but for the money it costs it's kind of a relief knowing they don't have to deal with the financial consequences if he turns out to be a bust. Sad thing is Cubs have no where else to turn to find the young pitching prospects they desperately need.

I heard someone on TV in the background early say that the Yankees would be lucky to get 4 seasons before they would be forced to rework his contract. They are expecting this kid to "Blow Up" in a good way in the MLB.

If Tanaka can be a consistent #2 starter and take pressure off of CC, this will work out very well for the Yankees. CC, Tanaka, Kuroda, Nova- this is a good rotation for the Yanks. If guys can stay healthy, with additions of McCann, Ellsbury and Beltran, the a Yanks will be back in the post season competing for a World Series title.

I would say the jury is still out on Darvish and Koji. I always thought the late Hideki Irabu would be good but he never worked out in any situation.

Darvish has been pretty darn good over the last 2 seasons, 29-18 3.34 ERA. Hiroki Kuroda only has an overall record of 68-70 but his career ERA is 3.40 over 6 seasons. Hisashi Iwakuma is 23-11 with a 2.84 ERA for Seattle over the past 2 seasons. Even Dice-K had an 18-3 2.90 ERA season for Boston in 2008. There have also been several effective relievers over the years.

I heard a discussion on Tanaka today. This signing sounds like a much bigger risk than what I thought it was originally. Tanaka has already thrown 1350 innings in Japan. That is more than all but 8 players in MLB history have thrown at his age. The most recent player to throw that many innings by his age in MLB history was Frank Tanana. He's got a lot of mileage on his arm already. Also, he's used to pitching every 7 days instead of every 5. Finally, although they gave him a lot of credit for having a great split finger pitch he tends to run his fastball up in the zone--that could be a disaster in Yankee Stadium against AL East teams. He might win the next 4 Cy Young Awards but after hearing all that I'm glad the Red Sox don't have $170 million tied up in him over the next 7 years.
