Track the Winter Meetings

Thread to track any and all activity from the Winter Meetings in Orlando this week:

Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN: The Phillies have indicated to other teams they are ready and willing to talk about Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels in trades.

Jerry Crasnick @jcrasnick: Also hearing #dbacks Shin Soo Choo stuff in lobby, but I lack the brainpower to figure out how Arizona could afford him.

Jerry Crasnick @jcrasnick: Source confirms @TBrownYahoo report that Cahill and Skaggs are among names being discussed in Trumbo talks. #angels #dbacks

That's more than 4 years and $15M per, right?

Guys with a .400+ OBP are extremely hard to find. In the current financial market that is MLB, it seems about right.

Choo should earn what he's asking for b/c his play dictates that contract. The Reds can't pay it though b/c Ludwick, Broxton and others have terrible deals. The Reds could find someone to get guys out in the 7th or 8th inning far cheaper than they can find anyone to get on base the rate Choo does.

With BP and Votto and Bruce et.al., he's way too steep for our Redlegs. I'd prefer to extend Latos, find a suitor for BP, maybe move Homer, then maybe he's not too steep.

Agreed and I'd look at extending Bruce even further if he wants more years for a little less than market value (the rumor I've heard is he wants that) so they don't lose him.

How many years does Homer have left on his current contract?

The Reds wouldn't pay that for Choo if they had a $50M payroll for next year - and I am glad they wouldn't. Nothing against Choo. He is probably worth that annual salary next year. It is every year after next that would worry me.

Question for those who might know - has there ever been a player signed to a long term deal that was worth his salary in year 5 and beyond?

No contract. He is going year to year and in arbitration. That is why the reds are probably going to move him. He apparently isn't interested in signing a multi year deal with the Reds.
