No contract. He is going year to year and in arbitration. That is why the reds are probably going to move him. He apparently isn't interested in signing a multi year deal with the Reds.

That's right. I would hate for them to lose Bailey but it doesn't seem realistic to keep him.

The Reds wouldn't pay that for Choo if they had a $50M payroll for next year - and I am glad they wouldn't. Nothing against Choo. He is probably worth that annual salary next year. It is every year after next that would worry me.

Question for those who might know - has there ever been a player signed to a long term deal that was worth his salary in year 5 and beyond?

In 2008, Miguel Cabrera signed a 8 year/152.3M contract....I'd say that one's been more than worth it, no?

Albert Pujols 7 years $100 million from the Cardinals in 04 is probably a contract they liked.

Evan Longoria got a 6 year contract extension originally and the Rays must have liked it b/c they tacked on 10 years and an additional $100M+ to it before it ended.

So Cabrera signed his deal at 25 and Pujols signed his at 24. I would go there for superstar players that age. Good finds both of you.

I believe the way I would look at this if I were a team is look at the back end. I would be very reluctant to be carrying a deal to age 35, and preferably be done at age 33.

The problem is, someone will sign them into their late 30's. So if you want them for their late 20's to early 30's you need to give them mid to late 30's as well. Unfortunate, really.

No doubt age/health was one of the biggest reasons those worked.

Very true. What we don't know is what guys will be getting paid per year in 5-7 years. For instance if Choo is putting up 75% of his current production in 7 years is $20M for that year terrible? If he's at 75% in year 3 and it declines to say 65% year 7 it was a bad contract.

2015 FA - This is his last year of arbitration.

Reds are making a push for Arroyo. Makes me think they fully intend to move Bailey soon.
