You Make The Call: Travel or Legal?

Featured Replies

Travel all day. If he had made a legitimate effort at shooting the ball then I could live with it. You let this slide and you're opening the door for other crap that can only be decided by opinion. Since we don't yet have robots for refs, I want my game officiated as close to the rule book as possible and less on opinions.

Why would a shot vs a pass matter?

Why would a shot vs a pass matter?

1. It makes me cringe because it doesn't look natural.

2. My understanding has always been (although I could be terribly wrong) that while driving for a lay up a small extra hard to determine step is legal while going up for the shot, but once that move to the basket is made it has to be completed. Switching gears then passing it off seems to invalidate that move as legal.

Looked like 3 steps min possibly 4 depending on the initial left foot shuffle during the spin.

He took 2 steps, spun took 2 more and passed so yeas its a travel... But its Duke. There is no such thing as a travel. This gives me the ability to post one of my favorite videos.

Looks like a travel because there's three steps. In real time, when that move is happening on a break and a top level D1 athlete is making it on the fly and in traffic, I can see how the call would be missed.

Reminds me of a discussion I had during the Sweet 16 one year with a Lexington area assistant who was sitting around us for the tournament. It was the Ballard-PRP game where Spillman made the jump stop that was debated pretty heavily late in the game and hit a big shot. He made a great point when he said, "he makes that move so quick, it's really hard to call". That's a high school player making it. Now imagine that magnified by 10 with a floor full of Spillmans.

drug his left foot on the initial spin. TRAVEL. Plus he plays for Duke and they cheat.

It's a travel but nobody calls travels anymore. We are officially in the 2 Pivot Feet and 3 Steps If You Do a Spin Move Era.

24/7. If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying.

I watched that play in real time and never could tell he traveled. I see it now.
