Question for everyone - can Jay Bruce play CF every day? Maybe Hamilton turns out to be the man in CF, but I am not sure about that. If not Hamilton, do they look at Bruce in CF? If Choo did it, I think Bruce could do it. Bruce stays in right. He's a gold-glover there. Schu and Hamilton initially split time in center. Ludwick starts the season in left. Going to be hard to upgrade the outfield without giving up pitching, and with Arroyo headed to Minnesota or wherever, giving up pitching is doubtful.

When Beltran was in and out of the lineup, that had a ripple effect on Craig, Adams. Mozeliak has said he wants to see what Adams can do given 500-plus at-bats, and the only position Adams can play is first. In others words, I think Cards would rather develop Adams -- and plant Craig in RF full-time -- rather than sign Beltran for another year. So it's more this than money. And, as you point out, signing Peralta probably lessens the need for Beltran's bat in lineup. Beltran's best position at this stage of his career is DH.

If Peralta can be productive off the juice and Adams and Craig can both continue like as they have then there is no need to pay Beltran a bunch of money to be a part time RF. I don't see any chance he stays in the NL no matter what he would prefer. He just can't hold up as a full time outfielder any more. How much would the Reds be willing to go on him?

If they go into the year with Votto, Ludwick, and Phillips still on the books....Not sure how they could afford it. If they are able to move Phillips or Ludwick, I think it'd be a very good deal. His production will more than justify $10M a year IMO.

Beltran isn't going to come cheap, despite his age and history of nagging injuries. One story I read said he's seeking a 4-year deal, which may mean the asking price is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 years at $45 million. He's an excellent player, both offensively and defensively, but signing him beyond two years would really be risky, especially for a less-than-major-market team such as the Reds.
