November 18, 201510 yr Love everything about Thanksgiving, but especially look forward to the Onion Pie that my sister always makes – it is awesome! This year I’ve been asked to bring a veggie casserole (no problem, I’ll make broccoli) and a sweet potato casserole. Yikes on the sweet potato, let me know if anyone has a suggestion/ go to recipe. I have a recipe for Kahlua sweet potatoes...
November 18, 201510 yr I have a recipe for Kahlua sweet potatoes... Yum lawildcat! Is it a casserole or whole sweet potatoes? Can you PM or post it?
November 18, 201510 yr Yum lawildcat! Is it a casserole or whole sweet potatoes? Can you PM or post it? It's a casserole. I will post it here when I get home from work tonight. Very easy and really good!
November 18, 201510 yr I suppose I could do that. Any suggestions for a Thanksgiving appropriate appetizer? Seems like the occasion would call for it to be a bit of a step up from the usual chips and dip fare. I'll give you a recipe for a chip dip you'll never have to feel ashamed of: 1 2lb brick Velveeta/Nice'n'Cheesy 2 15oz jars salsa medium 2 15oz cans refried beans 1lb pork sausage fried and crumbled 1 15oz can Hormel chili w/beans (optional) Couple bags tortilla chips — yellow corn are best with this dip Heat it all up in a crock pot until it's completely blended. Guaranteed hit, and you'll spend enough $$ making it so that you shouldn't feel guilty. I do this one every Thanksgiving (really, just about any big gathering) to get folks started with their cocktails.
November 18, 201510 yr Eating whatever you want doesn't have to mean as much as you want I may get banned from this thread, but one tip I have is to use a salad plate when you get your main course. We end up stuffing our plates anyways, and we are visual eaters, so cutting the size of your plate still gives you plenty of food and knocks down the calories by 25%-35% I would say. Or just eat a bunch of cheese and steak the day before so you don't have much storage space.
November 18, 201510 yr My Dad and Brother both fill their plates with a little bit of everything, turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans etc., then they mix it all together along with plenty of gravy. They eat this conglomeration, leaving the cranberries and sweet potatoes on the side. It looks like a horrible mess, but I've tasted it and it is delicious! I just don't want to see that mess on my plate or I would do it too.

November 18, 201510 yr I love it, but Thanksgiving really is disgusting. This is the most blasphemous post in the history of BGP. You sir are un-American! :lol2:

November 18, 201510 yr Well...he did move to Canada. Is Canadian Thanksgiving like American Thanksgiving except they watch hockey instead of football and eat round bacon and poutine while swilling down Tim Horton's coffee? ... yeah my vision of Canadian Thanksgiving actually sounds great.

I do this one every Thanksgiving (really, just about any big gathering) to get folks started with their cocktails. Have made that without the beans. We usually use a spicy Mexican sausage. Gonna have to try it with the refried beans/beans, that sounds good. Add milk to thin it a little the next day and it's great over scrambled eggs on texas toast.

Seems like the occasion would call for it to be a bit of a step up from the usual chips and dip fare. I love oysters on thanksgiving or Christmas and generally make scalloped oysters. That wouldnt work as an appetizer. But if I were asked to make an app and anything oyster wasn't part of the main meal, I'd go with oyster Rockefeller. Not everyone likes oysters, so use your own judgement on that one. It's one of my favorite apps ever though.
