Highlands 28 Covington Catholic 13

Congrats to the Birds just read the paper this morning and it appears Zach Harris finished his career at DCM Field in Zach Harris fashion. 30 carries for 194 yards and I am sure those were punishing yards. Drew making it happen with his feet as well, great to hear. Some nights the passing game isnt there and you have to adjusts which it sounds like Dale and the coaching staff did.

Now knowing that there were 7 kids who didnt play in the first game, the margin of victory being only 15 makes more sense. I still think the Birds roll the rest of the way and Cov Cath is probably going to be their toughest opponent.

For the first time all year, Highlands ran designed run plays for Houliston. A wrinkle that was successful a few times. Both Houliston rushing TD's were called run plays..

Congrats to HHS! They won, they were the better team and I am rather positive they will win their 7th straight state title!

I am so very, very proud of this CovCath Football team. The season didn't end as I would have liked but our kids played their hearts out and to see them crying on the turf at HHS after the game was over, is something that I will always remember.

The "D" played a great game but just once this season, I would have loved to see us being totally healthy. No, I am not offering any excuses but it hurts seeing kids you have grown to love and admire struggling with injures. Burchell had a monster of a game but on one foot, Nelms too played great with injures to his leg. Alex Wagner was week to week with his ankle and maybe a couple of HHS might have wondered why Matthew Way didn't return punts or kickoffs but he was playing the game with one hand, as he hurt his thumb in the Rowan County game. Did any of the HHS fans notice Zumdick out? He was after ten games the second leading tackler on the team! It just would have been fun seeing everybody play just once, on the field this season.

I also think that your QB had a better game than some of you think, remember CovCath held the UK bound Conner QB to almost nothing this season.

Our offense struggled last night, there is no denying this fact but again and this again is no excuse, I would have loved to have seen a healthy Luke Bir, Sam Dressman and Adam Wagner playing together this season more than in the one Boone County game.

I must say, that maybe our kids aren't angels but the sportsmanship or lack of it by #30 of HHS bothered me. Now I am not saying that to rag on the kid or team but if Dale doesn't see on the films the young man actions on the turf and doesn't have a rather stern talk with the young man, I will be terribly disappointed. HHS is too good of a program and Dale is too good of a head coach to allow one of his, to act like that!

Again congrats to HHS and am looking forward to hearing the scores of their next two games.

Maybe CovCath didn't win the state championship but I don't think anyone will disagree with me, that CovCath is the second best 4A team this season in the Commonwealth!

Good post TOG. Best of luck in Hoops this season.

Where was Joey Cochran last night? That kid is an animal!!!! I hope to see him playing linebacker next week against LexCath. His attitude and aggressiveness on the field will definitely be missed if he doesn't suit up..

Did Kruse step in for him. I read a nice article on that young man in the REcorder this week. Just another example of a kid waiting in the wings with fire.

What's with the Bellevue references? I agree it gets old after awhile.

Yup considering a high % of people living in Ft. Thomas had parents who grew up in Bellevue/Dayton/Newport. LOL

Yep...

Weinrich has to be the best coach in the state at making adjustments. CC went right down the field on their first possession and then HHS just shut them down until the game was decided. He has done this several times thru the years and especially coming out in the second halves of football games. When Dale finally hangs up his cleats, I look forward to Brian taking over. I do wish he could tone down some of the extra attitude some of his players have after making tackles when the other team has just made a 15 yard game. They should be upset that the other team just got a first down.

Two plays that stood out to me, Hoge planting a CC dback with a great legal text book block right in front of the HHS student section. Then getting up quickly with no fan fare and running back to get ready for the next play. And Urlidge making a nice tackle right at the line of scrimmage and then helping the kid up. Nice touch of class.

Evenly matched teams. Coaching and clock management won this game. The end of the first half was a perfect example of how not to call an offense. Then, on 4 th and. 2 with 9:28 to go and down 22, CC punts? You are down 3 scores??? You aren't going to get the ball 3 more times w Harris running behind that line. I was confused, but happy that it was the other sideline making those calls. Also, Highlands ability to execute and keep it simple really is fun to watch when you see CovCath continually try to out think themselves. Really makes you appreciate the way Mueller and Weinrich call a game.

Scoring late unnecessary TDs.

Cancelling JV games you know your going to lose big.

Playing safe down 3 scores instead of giving your team a chance to make a run at it.

Some coaches are more worried about scoring margins.

I was sitting with a buddy and we both said the same thing about Coach W.

it's a shame it never comes down to the two best teams in the finals.

Pretty much the defacto state championship game IMO.

CovCath is the second best 4A team this season in the Commonwealth!

What a great claim to make after a quarter final loss. Stop the playoffs - we have our winner and runner-up already. Take that Collins, Lex Cath, and Owensboro. What will you say if Highlands loses next week to Lex Cath?

I too am very proud of the way Highlands has played through adversity all yr long. Best medicine is a little rest...Just sayin

I must say those CovCath dbs are some headhunters...Man was there some hitting going on. I can see where those helmet to helmet plays may have been questionable in their game against JC. Wait, HS doesnt have this rule or the collar tackle rule.

Just a bunch of teenage boys gettin after one another and playing with a whole bunch of emotion. Really no need to call numbers and kids out and I can assure all Dale and Brian will address any concerns if they see fit...:thumb:

I agree with Q good post. When HHS #30 started talking the coaches from CCH, I thought this showed a lack of class and should have been flagged. What some of these players don't understand is when they do these things and then the other team retaliates on your offense, someone eventually will get hurt. It happened last night when a CCH player drilled a HHS offensive lineman in the back shortly after the #30 incident.
