I feel like it would be a little more effective if some company like Nike or Russell came out with a "Pink Football Apparel" line that donated 100% of the profits to Breast Cancer charities. That to me would make it a little more easy for me to support. I agree with Slinging Sammy that it has become more of a "look at us wearing pink" event rather than focused on the actual cause. Further, a lot of companies are making a lot of money off the cause, rather than pushing all of those profits towards the cause. In the end, it is a good thing for a great cause, but I just feel like it could be done better and with a good deal more emphasis on having the representation of awareness reflect actual awareness and financial assistance.

Adidas provided pink jerseys to some select teams nationwide in the 2012 season to wear in October. Trinity was one of those teams. The Rocks wore the jerseys in their home game against Male. The way it went down is this: the coaches said nothing about the school being selected for the honor and laid them on tables only after the players returned to the locker room after their pregame warmups. According to friends inside that locker room, the guys were so enthusiastic it was hard to settle them down. They donned the jerseys and returned to the field for the toss and kickoff as the fans went nuts. The Rocks played a good game against a tough Male squad and won that night. But you could tell those kids were sailing.

 

I do want to tell an earlier correspondent who wondered about why breast cancer gets its own month that I share his curiosity. My Mom died of pancreatic cancer, my sister-in-law died of colon cancer, one best friend of mine died last year from throat cancer, another is dying now of lung cancer. Seems kind of weird to elevate one form of this killer to star status. Still, at an all-boys school like Trinity, where Moms are a huge part of everything, it was a special night last year.

Suppose a Coach sits all his players down and has an in depth discussion with them about Breast Cancer (and hopefully all types of Cancer) and finds a way for the team/individual players to support the cause but tells them one way they are not going to do it is with Pink anything for whatever reason. Do you have an issue with that?

 

I don't have an issue with it because it is the coaches decision in the end, but it's not the coaches position to try to discuss Breast Cancer with the players, and then try to interpret the emotions that go with members of survivors. I know a lot of coaches see it as a fashion statement, so deny the colors. It's one month of acknowledgement for the cause that's done Nationwide so why try to stop it?

I think anyone could probably organize these other tributes, the difference is that the Breast Cancer Awareness supporters seem to be FAR more active than supporters of other types of cancer awareness.

 

It's marketing. Susan B. Komen foundation is everywhere. I won't donate to them. My mom survived breast cancer, so I know the disease is far reaching and affects many. But I would rather contribute directly to someplace that does free mammograms for our local ladies right here in NKY.

Apparently only a shade over 8% of the money from "pink" NFL merchandise goes to breast cancer research, according to Business Insider. Around 11% total is given to cancer charities, but ~3% of that goes to administration.

I think wearing the pink has gone overboard. If the players want ot support the Breast Cancer Awareness, then instead of buying the 50.00 pair of pink gloves or 10.00 pink towel, give the money to the cancer research center. Im sure they would benefit more from the 50.00 than Nike would. I think it is all a scam to sell products for companies.

No one is trying to stop it but with only a small percentage of the money going to cancer/cancer research there are much better ways to support the cause.

For every coach that denies a kid to wear pink, the coach, ()he or she should spend a day in a Cancer unit and rethink. Yes, some of the athletes may have no idea or real connection to the cause, but for those that have relatives and friends that suffer through Breast Cancer, they like to take this opportunity to display it through the colors. Football and the Uniforms is just a game, Breast Cancer is about life. I say Pink It Up. JMO

I was thinking about this. While all cancers are terrible, I know MANY more families impacted by breast cancer than other cancers. I have a large family with history of cancer and it still isn't close. Maybe it's just me.

This is what Raceland does, it shows support for the cause but doesn't get things out of persecutive. Raceland also has a purple ribbon decal on their helmets for Alzheimer's awareness.

Football has been played for decades without gloves. Forgive me if I don't see the difference in $25 gloves and $45 gloves that catch the same. You're still spending too much, regardless of price. People are buying it so they are selling it. It's not the companies fault. 90% of what we purchase is a want over a need. No difference here.

 

That's a great way to show support. And that's not harming anything either.
