St. Xavier Insider- week 6

Featured Replies

This past week, the tigers improved their record to 4-2. They travelled to the beehive and escaped with a w thanks to the play of junior qb, Noah Houk. Nagle was pulled towards the end of the second quarter due to his dismal performance. He fumbled the ball away in the redone and was immediately benched. Noah was then inserted and revived the offense. Noah finished the night 7-11 for 142 yards and a pair of td tosses. Hayden led all receivers with 91 yards and 1 td. Walker had 13 carries for 68 yards, 1 receiving td and a 62 yard punt return td negated by a personal foul. Davis led the rushing attack with 86 yards in 12 carries in 1 half of play. Defensively McCormick recorded a 40 yard int return for a td.

Upcoming Game

The tigers are now preparing to face its archival, Trinity, at Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium on Friday at 8pm. The shamrocks have beaten the Tigers the last 6 meetings and look to add to that streak. The last game between the two resulted in a 15-14 win by the shamrocks. Most of the X faithful, blamed the loss on the play calling, which some don't believe has changed much this year. This trinity squad looks much different than last years squad. The shamrocks have a extremely mobile qb who can kill you with his legs if given the chance. Throughout the season this tiger d has struggled vs mobile qbs, so how they fare remains to be seen. Both squads are coming off wins and look to continue winning. The shamrocks boast a 2-3 record which could improve to .500 this week. The biggest news surrounding this game, comes from the X side. Given the way nagle has played all season, most fans want to see Houk replace him as the starter and take this offense to new heights. Everyone in the camp is anxiously awaiting the decision.

Defense

The tiger d surrendered 13 points in their win at central. The defense was stingy, in only allowing 126 yards of offense on the night. The yellow jackets leading rusher had 58 yards on the ground, and their starting qb passed for 50 yards two tds and an int. Central ony recorded two first downs in the second half and never moved the ball past midfield. This season, the defense has shown they can put this squad in position to win but they need help from their counterparts to seal the deal.

Offense

With Nagle at the helm the offense couldn't score a point. Infact they recorded three turnovers. One by nagle and two by two backup running backs. Noah took over towards the end of the second quarter and led the tigers to 20 unanswered points. Davis and walker both played one half respectively. The rushing attack totals were well under their normal production rate but I attribute that to neither back playing a complete game. The tigers face a young defense this week, who seem to be figuring it out, but the possibility of a big game on the ground is realistic.

Special Teams

The special teams unit has shown steady improvement from week 1 and are where they need to be at this point In the season. Good punt and kickoff coverage were displayed in this game. Kicker, Jake Collins was a perfect 3-3 on pats and 2-2 on field goals of 23 and 34 yards.

I was going to stay out of this thread, but I can't let it go. BJ Nagle is a kid and he deserves better than your commentary. Remember, this is a kid that was uprooted for his senior year of high school. That is a tough load for any kid to carry. He lost the teamates he spent three years with. He came into a highly visible situation under a lot of pressure, some of it supplied by the over the top expectations of the same adults that now use "dismal" to describe him. I am sure he has done his best. If the coaches believe that they have a better chance to win with a different QB, so be it, but leave the personal assaults on a kid out of it. I hope that the coaches don't care who the fans or the team wants to see.

Saying he had a dismal performance is a personal attack? If I offended anyone I apologize.

FWIW, I had the same reaction that Trinity alum did.

What's wrong with "dismal"? His play was dismal by AT's account. At the BG game, I knew BG was going to win when they stopped running the ball and let this kid throw. X was making a run in 2nd half and this kid fumbled - game over. Check the results and ask those that were there why X lost.

AT didn't use personal disparaging terms for this kid in my opinion. T Alum I get what your saying and your heart is in the right place, but if you don't want the heat don't come to X or T - Tell Dad you want to stay where you were. Again just my opinion.

To me it is never right to single out high school kids for that much individual blame. Even in the account of the game he pointed out three fumbles with Nagle at QB, but two of them were by unnamed players. All of the offensive woes were not this kids fault.

At the end of the day...it is what it is. Dismal, aweful, not good, etc. Whatever word you put in there the bottom line is that BJ is not getting the job done.

You did nothing out of line!

You did nothing out of line!

I just remembered why I don't like X. That kid is one of yours. I would NEVER talk about one of my kids that way in a public forum and since all of the Trinity kids are part of the family I'd never talk about them that way in public. The attitude seems to me to be that the kid is only worthwhile if he can do something for X. Otherwise, trash him.

That's easy to say when you've won 6 in a row, sit atop the 6A polls, just had arguably your best team ever last year, and won an entire National Championship. I bet if the rolls were reversed and X had done these things and you had a transplant kid at QB and he fumbled twice in the red zone and is playing the critical position on offense and just not getting it done that there MAY be some grumblings in St Matthews. I'm sure you know if I'm wrong, but since you're winning you don't have to say anything, which is a great position to be in.

Again TAlum, I just don't think AT threw this kid under the bus to the degree you do. We can disagree.

I have got to be kidding me. This forum is exactly that...to discuss, point out, and let people know your feelings.

If the player is not doing the job well, why not call it like it is? But I guess everything is perfect in Shamrock land and no one is ever talked down to. Give me a break...AT called it like it is.

Trinity Alum is correct. I have observed this forum for awhile now. I am a former high school coach and BJ is getting thrown under the bus. He is absolutely a kid that got thrown into a perfect storm at St X and is paying dearly for it. There was such a ton of hype and bragging going on when he and his dad became Tigers. Obviously, no one had actually seen him play but still raised his game. The other parts of the storm are a new coach with controversial methods in becoming head coach, I may be mistaken but I believe 4 dad's are on staff (it was said that Carlos Phillips coaches) also the huge push to throw the ball with kids brought up in a different system while having proven monsters in the backfield. BJ didn't stand a chance with all that.

Rip on the staff, the alumni, the administration, the chosen ones that threatened their their money if Glaser wasn't removed...it is an absolutely mess at St X. It isn't the kids fault, however. He is who he is- develop him, test him and then make the correct call for the team. Not the Dad, not the hype and not the passing game. Who gets the job done and has chemistry with the boys.

That's pretty much the problem here Avid Tiger. It hit your alls program. It can happen to any team, any school and any sport when people believe the hype and have a controversial coaching situation.

Btw. I didn't intend on that being an insulting or slamming post. Its just an observers point of view that has worked with kids, dealt with parents and controversy. The kids seem to just not get the teaching moment or have to have hard lessons due to the adults that could have been avoided.

There is nothing harder on a coach or his family than coaching his child. Coaches retire or are fired after this experience. There is an easy target to criticize and it can be heaped on. Please leave the kids alone. It is a team game. There are other weaknesses.

There are other weaknesses and I point them out in every review I do. I don't just single nagle out.
