Has anyone witnessed Johnson Central's kicker first hand?

Featured Replies

This was in today's HL:

Johnson Central Coach Jim Matney said "it sounds like the football is exploding" when the Golden Eagles' Tyler Pack kicks a field goal or extra point." The 6-foot-4, 230-pound sophomore detonated a 58-yard field goal in a victory over Perry County Central last week, tying the state record set by Raceland's Aaron Pettrey in 2003. "I didn't know if I made it," Pack said. "I thought it might be 1 or 2 yards short." Matney knew his kicker had plenty of leg. "I've seen him kick a 65-yarder in practice, and he's pretty consistent around 60 yards." Pack made his only other field goal attempt this season from 52 yards. Long snapper Quade Ward and holder Zach Gound help Pack execute his kicks. He's hoping they get a shot at a state record in the coming weeks. "I think I can hit from 60 if I get the chance," he said. Pack, a goalie in soccer, is relatively new to football, but he doesn't shy away from contact. "He's 2-for-2 on tackles running down a return man," Matney said. "And he's got standing ovations for that."

Sounds like a great kicker and it isn't that I don't trust what Matney says, I was just looking to add some credibility to what he said from anonymous posters on a message board.

So he can make it from 58 yet he's only attempted 2 FGs?

He kicked a 65-yarder in practice. Isn't the NFL record like 63 yards?

There probably isn't a need for many field goals when you are playing the Canadian and Home Schooled portion of your schedule.

I was think that too lol. But he's 58-for-58 on extra points.

M guess is that if it was just the snapper, the holder, the kicker, and Coach there, that it was at least 70 yards. :D

Going to go out on a very short limb here and say Matney gets his kid the record. And if Pack can kick them from that far it's rightfully so.

Oh they will attempt it. Don't you remember a few years ago Matney allowing a KO return to be returned on purpose to get his All State RB back on the field to continue his quest that night. I remember watching that game on I-high and Jude literally not being able to walk by games end. This won't be the last time we hear about a very long FG attempt by JC this year. I for one hope Pack gets it.

and yet, he still doesn't have the time to post his stats on the KHSAA scoreboard web pages!

LOL Jim Matney is the ultimate HS Message Board troll and he doesn't even post.

He is good for at least a couple controversies a year.

Here is where I predict Matney will bring in the controversy. He will have his QB drop back and take a 5 yard loss to set up the state record yardage and get the ball in the middle of the field for the kicker. It will probably be in a game they are winning by 6 TD's and he may do this 2, 3, or more times if that is what it takes before the kid makes one. Would that bother anyone?

Scenario 2:

Backup RB breaks clear for a 70 yard TD...Matney stops him then makes him run backwards and reverse field to the middle of the hashes at the 48 before taking a knee.

Scenario 3:

Leading 56-0 the opposing team has driven for successive first downs and reached midfield. Matney places his starting defense back in and blitzes on each down to assure they get one more possession. The First String offense then goes hurry up until they reach the 48.

I don't need to post any Scenario's....

You boys are doing such a fine job of covering all the bases! Love it.....

Again I hope the kid breaks the record. I wouldn't want the year to go by and Coach Matney not get some type of publicity at his kids expense. It's almost like it is made for TV!

The opportunities in high school are rare. Especially for a State Record. Pettrey took a delay of game to move the ball back when he broke the State Record, he wanted that record and getting the opportunity to kick a long one just doesn't happen much.
