5A...in Texas...wow

Featured Replies

Was watching Friday Night Lights (movie version) for the uptenth time this weekend, and decided to Google Permian High. Found out they play in TX 5A division, highest division in TX, so I did a little research on that. There are actually 7(seven) 11 man football divisions...5A down to two divisions of 1A, and a Private school division. I clicked on 5A and started counting. Without looking, how many 5A teams do you think they have in TX. Take a guess as I'm sure some of you like me probably don't know...now scroll down for the answer.

420. Yep, 420 5A teams. Now, I may have miscounted, so that could be + of - a couple of teams, but right at 420. Wow. I don't know how many are in the other divisions, I stopped at 5A. I had no clue. And to think we have 6 divisions here. Just seems slightly off kilter on the face of it.

A little deceiving because each of Texas's classes break down into two separate playoff brackets. So including six man, there are 6 classes, but they produce 12 state champions. There are roughly 1200 teams in the state playing for 12 state championships, which means its about 100 per class/title. This doesn't include the private class in Texas.

But if you were going to divide Kentucky just like Texas, at 100 per class, there would be 2 classes, with 21 teams left over.

None of the above included 6 man...they have their own divisions. If you include them then yes their are more divisions.

There are 32 districts in 5A, with it appears to be anywhere from 9 to 16 teams in each district. I don't know how they break them up, but they appear to all be lumped together in one big class to me. with 32 districts I assume they take top 2 teams, two brackets of 32 teams each and winners of the two brackets play for state title. I could be wrong but that's what I would think they do. Which would mean winner comes out of the pool of all 420 teams.

I also stand corrected...they also have 2 separate divisions of 2A football.

They have 32 districts in 5A. The top four teams in the district make the playoffs, but then it gets interesting. The two schools with the largest enrollment play in 5A-Division 1 playoffs while the two smaller enrollments play in the 5A-Division 2 playoffs. It actually creates a somewhat odd phenomenon where the Division 2 champion could conceivably have a larger enrollment than the Division 1 champion.

Linked below is a copy of the alignment. The largest district has ten teams, but the majority have around 8.

Notes on Football Playoffs

Conference 1A six-man Division I and II: the top two teams from each district advance to the playoffs. One state champion is crowned in Conference 1A six-man Division I and one state champion is crowned in 1A six-man Division II.

Conference 1A 11-man Division I and II: the top three teams from each district advance to the playoffs. The district winner will receive a bye in the first round of the football playoffs. One state champion is crowned in 1A 11-man Division I and one state champion is crowned in 1A 11-man Division II.

Conference 2A Division I and II: the top four teams from each district advance to the playoffs. One state champion is crowned in 2A Division I and one state champion is crowned in 2A Division II.

Conference 3A, 4A and 5A: the top four teams from each district advance to the playoffs. The two schools with the largest enrollments automatically advance to the Division I bracket. The remaining two schools advance into the Division II bracket. There are two state champions per conference in Conference 3A, 4A and 5A.

On the face of it, it does. But as we've discussed on here several times the number of classes in KY comes from the vast variety of school sizes in KY.

The son of a buddy got a job teaching at Plano East outside of Dallas. I asked him how many kids were in the school. 3100 was his reply. When I expressed shock at the size of the school he said "Well that's only 11th and 12th grade. We have a second school for 9th and 10th grade that has the same number of students."

6200 kids.

I'll bet that my guess which for some reason was 128 will be closer than a few folks but not everyone. That's a lot of 5A schools. I'd like to see how much size disparity there is between the largest and smallest in that class.

That's a good point. But if one school has 3000 boys and another in the class has 2000, is that as noticeable of a difference as Kentucky's difference of 600 (smallest) to 1300 (largest) in 6A?

#'s typically drive competition. Is it going to be as overwhelming as 1200 compared to 600 I wouldn't believe so.

Trying to describe the Friday Night Football scene here does it no justice. It's like trying to explain high school basketball in Kentucky to someone from Texas, you just don't do it justice.

TX football and KY high school b-ball are not the same IMO. It may have been back a few years/decades but TX high school football is much bigger than KY high school b-ball. IMO KY high school ball lives off of the legand of UK basketball.

Everything's bigger in Texas

Exactly what I was thinking. Because UK basketball is what I really think is huge in Kentucky. When you've got 5 year old girls tracking down their preacher before service to remind him not to go over because UK plays at noon yea that says a lot in regards to what that state holds in high regard.

I once talked to the youngest coach in 5A Texas. He made 6 figures. He said his pay was small compared to others. He said some schools the head football coach only coaches and the principal has to call before he can come into his building.

I love watching schools like Southlake Carrol a couple of years ago. Actually watching one on Fox Sports right now.
