Exactly what I was thinking. Because UK basketball is what I really think is huge in Kentucky. When you've got 5 year old girls tracking down their preacher before service to remind him not to go over because UK plays at noon yea that says a lot in regards to what that state holds in high regard.

 

So as to not take away from this thread I started a new thread about KY being a b-ball state in the boys b-ball thread.

Comparing TX ball to KY ball is apples and oranges. What are the two states respective populations. If the states were divided into classes, TX would be 6A and KY would be 1A or 2A.

TX football and KY high school b-ball are not the same IMO. It may have been back a few years/decades but TX high school football is much bigger than KY high school b-ball. IMO KY high school ball lives off of the legand of UK basketball.

 

Maybe it was just the school/area and era I grew up in and the part of Texas I'm in now.

 

Mountain basketball is still in the nostalgic phase, or at least it was when I was still able to go to games. Attendance, school spirit, etc. was still up when I would get a chance to see a game. Agree that Kentucky High School Basketball is made even more special because of UK basketball though.

 

People here have a hard time conceptualizing the attendance for the biggest games at the Sweet 16 in Rupp.

I was meaning more in the sense of seeing the whole community coming out to support the teams, the pageantry, hearing all the sports talk radio and reading the local papers covering the hometown team, seeing kids at the games playing on the sidelines.

 

Even some of my friends who are accomplished young people in areas other than sports who are far removed from high school still slip up and talk about the "glory days... back when" type thing.

I once talked to the youngest coach in 5A Texas. He made 6 figures. He said his pay was small compared to others. He said some schools the head football coach only coaches and the principal has to call before he can come into his building.

I love watching schools like Southlake Carrol a couple of years ago. Actually watching one on Fox Sports right now.

 

I could not imagine being that guy. The "next head coach" at a decent Texas high school is a more popular person than the back-up QB at UK.

San Antonio has some good teams, but in general, aren't competitive with the powers from Houston and Dallas (i.e., Alamo Heights, Judson, and Smithson Valley are some of the better teams down here, but don't compare to a Houston Katy or Dallas Skyline when it comes playoff time). Nonetheless, SA is the 7th most populous city in the US, and this is it's high school football shrine.

 

Here's my favorite stadium to see down here. Seating 23,000, it is the largest high school stadium in the state of Texas. Half of the stadium is carved out of a side of a hill, and is located in one of the nicer areas of San Antonio. The exterior is made of a tannish limestone (not really the same color as the limestone buildings on UK's campus). The facility was built in 1940, and renovated for $35 million in 2010.

Understand, but you are talking about a state with 26MM people vs. one with 4.4MM. Dont get me wrong, I think TX HS football is awesome and it should be. What a pool to pull from.

Funny you say that. I was just in San Antonio last week and spoke to some locals about all of the khan artists that infiltrated after Katrina. Most had to do with the Gov't issued debit cards. Sad.

Heartbreaking. Have a friend from school whose a Louisiana native- doesn't even speak of it really, seems like it's still too soon.

I flew into Dallas earlier this week..it was fun seeing the huge football stadiums as we descended. Something interesting I learned is that for the entire downtown Dallas, business district, and arts district there were only actually 8000 people living there full-time. Now imagine how many people work there, and the population f Dallas, and that tells you how many people live in the urban sprawl of that city.

I lived in the North Dallas area (Plano, etc.) from 1990 thru 1992. Areas such as Flower Mound, Frisco, Plano were still relatively small. Now going back there a couple of years ago, I didn't even know the place it had grown so much.

 

I thought Tennessee had some big high schools but if I'm calculating correctly only 3 schools in TN would even qualify for TX Class 5A. Katy HS won the Class 5A, Division 2 and has ONLY 2,800 students. Allen HS and some of the Plano schools have in excess of 5K.

I was under the impression that private school teachers make a lower wage compared to public school teachers with the same credentials, experience and responsibilities.

Head coaches in KY make a small stipend that, I have heard may approach $10,000 for some of the "higher paid" coaches. Many may also be assigned certain duties at the school that may/can pay a small stipend but allow them the freedom to concentrate on coaching when their sport is in season, all in an effort to boost their income and subsidize the work they put into their particular sport. KHSAA does NOT allow booster clubs/organizations to pay coaches the way they do in AL and I assume TX as well. That is illegal in KY. That's why you hear of coaches in places like AL and TX making 6 figure salaries. I'm not saying this doesn't go on in KY, but it isn't supposed to.

 

As for a private school, they still have to follow the same KHSAA rules, but how they pay their coaches may be different, I can't speak to that.
