I had a very enjoyable evening watching the fireworks with a group of CovCath Coaches, Parents, Fans and Boosters of CovCath from a beautiful home in Newport overlooking the Cincinnati skyline, with a great view of the fireworks.

 

What a wonderful evening "The Boss" and I had!

 

Now I must say the fireworks were outstanding and the little that we couldn't see live from the balcony of our Host home, we saw on the big HDTV he had set up on the balcony.

 

Our Hosts had the WEBN music pumped up loud, so all could hear but to be honest, while this was the best time (and yes I have attended many of the fireworks show going back to the very first 10th anniversary of WEBN radio, very first WEBN fireworks) I had and was IMHO the best fireworks show ever, the music was to me at least, unrecognizable.

 

I understand I am getting older, okay I am old but not one single song could I make out that I knew and honestly it meaning the music just didn't seem to sync with the blast like in past firework shows.

 

So if you went to the fireworks on Sunday night or watched on TV, what did you think of the WEBN fireworks and music?

I agree, as good as the fireworks were, the soundtrack was equally bad for us older folks. I get playing to their audience, makes sense, but at least throw us old folks a bone, :lol2:. Can't see what putting a few seconds of some Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd or anything recognizable to the over 40 crowd would hurt. But, again, the show was great.

Great fireworks and agreed one of the best visually. I too attended the first, and many over the years.

 

Used to be impressed with the music in year's past as they used to make attempts to stretch out from their normal station playlist and add to it classical music, or at least rock tunes from various eras in an attempt to be all inclusive and please many.

 

Now they are stuck only on the current vibe of the angry sounding stoner rock that they play on their station that only an isolated bunch of youngsters who appreciate those angry vibes can dig. It's WEBN's works, so I guess they can do whatever they want, but if they had any foresight they'd understand that this celebration for the Greater Cincinnati Area is so much more than just their self-centered classless aims. There was one track towards the end of the works that I did not recognize that at least mellowed out a bit and added a somewhat dreamy vibe, but aside from that, mostly just sounds of anger.

 

The theme was "Zombies"??? ... and they repetitively ran the vocal track that stated something in the line of: "Now that Hell is full, the dead will walk the Earth"??? Really??? Lovely positive message for a half a million folks from small children to seniors. I suppose I just didn't get the joke???

 

I'm glad you brought this up TOG as I'm on the same page as you about the music . Outside of my dissatisfaction of them missing by more than a mile there, it was visually stunning.

 

The station itself has been in a steady decline for years. In the late 60's they were cutting edge with album oriented rock of the day that was more in line with "The Summer of Love"... then as years went by they increasingly became negative. Now I personally can't listen to them, or their loud mouthed sophomoric DJ's for more than a few seconds, if that much.

I know, I kind of hinted to that. Would just be nice if they'd consider those that have supported them years ago. What would a quick hit of music we all know and love hurt?

I actually consider myself to be someone who keeps up with new music on the Rock n Roll side but even I found myself scratching my head wondering who they were playing. I love Linkin Park and thought they timed that music perfectly with the Bridge Waterfall.

 

They should always figure out a way to tie in Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. Gotta go back to the roots and let us old guys reminisce.

 

Great show, we watched at home in HD and avoided all the drunken idiots down on the floodwall.

You guys need to listen more to newer music. Rob Zombie has some good stuff. Disturbed is really good. There were a couple songs I didn't care for and I agree, they didn't do as good a job syncing the music to the fireworks as usual. The fireworks themselves were as good as ever and I think that was the best conclusion ever. It would have been nice to have an oldie or two in the mix though.

I do if I think it's good. I like the Rival Sons for instance. Most of what I heard last night, I'm not interested in. :lol2:

It's official: I'm old

 

I still keep up with stuff and admittedly more mellower, arty, or freak folky, and not so much hard rocky stuff than in the past. I have a couple of White Zombie releases from the early to mid-nineties and dug it for it's sorta straightforward catchy Metallica sound. I did see its redundancy back then and sorta lost interest fast with his repetitive growl "Yeah", but dug its sonic riffage. I was drifting by then from the metal world, and that was one of my last chances to hang on. Except for maybe Marilyn Manson some.

 

Disturbed is most definitely a good name for that band. Paid a little bit of attention to them early on and saw some of its appeal, but they were coming out at a time when I was losing my interest in heavier angrier stuff. Sometimes heavy hits the spot, but for me not nearly as much as it once did. I suppose I can see the attraction for a younger rebellious audience for if I didn't I would be denying one of the phases of my youth.

Missed the fireworks. Had better time at the lake. ?
