Part of that 70% of failure is being lost mentally throughout the course of a season. It comes with the territory. Votto is different because he shows very little emotion. Heck, sports psychologists would say those guys are the toughest mentally.

That's not showing emotion. Throwing helmets, bats, gloves, arguing with umpires...etc. Wearing your emotions on your sleeve like BP does would be considered mental weakness. However, he does have a way of not letting that impact too much of what he does.

While I agree, it's not limited to just him. It seemed a couple years ago, people were praising the Reds for being aggressive on the base paths (going from first to third on a single, taking the extra base if the ball goes by the cut off man, etc.)...but, they were smart about it. This year, it looks like they're trying to be aggressive, but are doing it in a reckless fashion.

Marty is Marty, whatever. But Thom tries so hard, it's embarrassing sometimes.

Marty B is the biggest Reds hater out there!! Listen to how excited he gets when the other team makes a big play and compare it to how he reacts when the Reds make a big play.

 

Marty deserves much of the criticism that comes his way, including much of what was written about him in this thread. He has a tremendous ego, loves life a lot, and can be mean-spirited to get laughs. All of that said, the one thing he most assuredly isn't is a "Reds hater".

 

Sometimes, and Gametime and anyone else who has spent countless hours with athletes at a high level will attest to, you can learn too much about the athletes where while you root for the team, you find it hard to root for the players. You see how they act privately, you don't just see them as the PLAYER, but you get to know them as the PERSON. In many cases, you are exposed to all of their flaws, and honestly, fans don't typically see their favorite players as anything but on-the-field (or court) personas. Marty knows these guys well and likes very few of them -- I'm sure the feeling is often mutual. Still...he wants the team to win and do well. Hell, he sees himself as an extension of the Reds in many ways, so he darn sure isn't hating himself.

Agree. Used to enjoy Chris Welsh and George Grande on the cable TV broadcasts. Grande had an upbeat game call that is missing on both radio and TV these days. Every pitch of every inning ain't life or death.

On the other hand, I think Grande may be too sugary sweet sometimes.

All of his mental blunders on the field, number of outs, base running, watch his at bats and some of the pitches he swings.

Doing my best to remember the exact quote during the Reds broadcast but Marty said something like this after Votto batted....

 

"Somehow, sometime, someone is going to have to explain exactly what the heck is going on with Joey Votto....... I mean I don't know why its such a sacred subject that no one will talk about it......"

 

 

Then on the opposite side Sunday morning on WLW Ken Broo and a writer from The Sporting News declared that Votto is certainly one of the Top 10 players in MLB.....

 

So how can they be on such opposite sides?

One thing I've learned about Marty over the years, he wears his feelings on his sleeve and can be very opinionated.

 

I think he can be too opinionated at times and then will change his tone depending on what direction the wind blows. Something to keep in mind, Votto has been on base 8 out of his last 8 at bats tying a career high.

 

Votto isn't nor will ever be most probably a power hitter, he is a contact hitter and hits for average, for some reason some people think he needs to be hitting 40 HR's a year, that won't happen, at least on a consistent basis. I have no problem with Votto, I have more of a problem with Bruce who struggles big time with guys on base lately.
