Huge win for the Tigers!

Not knowing much about Lima, I will say it was a good win for Bwood.

They used to be really really strong. They are rebuilding but this was a good game for the Tigers in preparation for Mayfield.

Regardless of the opponent, I would never classify a victory as a "bad win".

You said it was a good a win, I take your word because you know football and tell it like it is.

Homers would say a good win even against Ludlow. A win is a win but some wins don't have a good aroma.

Surprised the margin was this close, but a win is a win and congrats to the Tigers

Heard Thomas went down anyone know what happend??

Knee injury. It doesn't look good. I don't know how bad but he was on crutches with the big knee brace. He injured breaking up a fade TD pass on a 4th down play.

That was not a well played football game but it is a win.

Hold on Ru. You referred to the game as a good "game". Another poster used the term "good win". In my opinion you can have a bad game and still come away with a victory. That is all I was trying to say and I did not mean to come across as I was splitting hairs.

Early season loss to a player may be key for beechwoods shot at state if he isn't able to return.

This was one ugly football game. Lima Senior may have reached 200 yards in penalties. Beechwood's offense was bad all night. I believe they had 2, maybe 3, first downs in the entire game. With all the incomplete passes, penalties, injuries ... it was a long night. But the Tigers played solid defense and made the plays they needed to get the win. Here are the details:

First Quarter - Lima received the opening kickoff and moved the ball to the 20. They then gave a preview of what to expect the rest of the night as they committed several penalties until they were 4th and 53 ... yes, 53 yards to go. Beechwood threw 3 incomplete passes on their first possession and gave a preview of what to expect from their offense the rest of the night. And those first two possessions are pretty much the story of the game. Each team went 3 and out on their next possessions. Then Lima moved the ball before being stopped on downs at the 15. Beechwood had another 2 incomplete passes and then tried to catch Lima off guard by running a fake punt play. Stringer was tackled 2 yards short of the first down and Lima had 1st and 10 at the 23. The Tigers defense stood up to the challenge and stopped them on downs.

Second quarter - Lima's 4th down play was the first play of the 2nd quarter, Mitch Thomas broke up a fade pass attempt and somehow twisted his knee as he turned to break up the play. He did not return to the game and early reports are not good. Beechwood started at their own 13 and finally got their first 1st down of the game. Three more plays though and it was time to punt again. It was a 12 yard punt and Lima had the ball just 34 yards from the end zone. Once again the Tiger defense did the job with DT Riley McKown getting a sack on 4th down. McKown played a great game with at least 4 sacks and many other tackles. Beechwood started on the 48 after the sack and once again ran the ball out of punt formation, falling 1 inch short of the first down. Lima moved the ball and finally got a score when #25 Jameel Lyles ran it in from 3 yards out. Lyles was very impressive running the ball for Lima. He reminded me of Gabe Gray, the Cov Cath back a couple years ago. Lyles was short and not as stocky as Gray but he ran very hard, broke tackles and had speed as well. Lima should have put the ball in his hands more. Lyles TD came with 4:23 to go and put Lima up 7-0. The next play was named the play of the game. Ethan Stringer ran the Lima kickoff back 90(?) yards and just like that the game was tied at 7 following the Miles Sletto extra point. Lima had one more possession but was forced to punt. The Tigers took a knee to end the half.

The second half opened with another nice kickoff return by Stringer and Beechwood's first possession of the half started at the Lima 44. Two offsides penalties by Lima gave Beechwood a first down. Then the Tigers were stopped on downs. Lima's penalty problems hurt them again, getting them into a 4th and 25 so they punted. Beechwood had good field position at the Lima 48. Fieger finally completed his first pass downfield in the entire game, hitting Stringer for a 48 yard TD pass. Fieger had completed one screen pass in the game before this TD pass. Sletto kicked the extra point and with 7:44 to go and the Tigers had their first lead at 14-7. Lima looked like they were down but RB Lyles wouldn't let that last. On a 3rd and 7 play he was met in the backfield but broke several tackles and took off for a 25 yard gain and a first down. A couple plays later, QB Justice Graham hit Marquis Graham for a 35 yard TD pass. That tied the game at 14 with 4:59 to go. Beechwood had another 3 and out but Joe Studer flipped the field with a 60 yard punt. The teams each had a short possession before punting.

Fourth Quarter - Lima opened the quarter with a 3 and out with McKown getting another sack on 3rd down. Beechwood took over on their own 18. On 3rd down, Fieger completed a pass to Jalen Hayden and the Tigers finally had another first down. Two plays later, Fieger hit Hayden with a 50 yard TD pass. The snap was low on the extra point and the Tigers threw an incomplete pass. That left an opening for Lima with the score 20-14 Beechwood. Lima converted on a 4th down attempt but then had to punt the ball with 3:29 to go. Lima was out of timeouts, being forced to use them on various mixups earlier in the half. All the Tigers needed was one first down - they couldn't get it. With 1:11 to go they punted the ball, but the Lima return man bobbled the ball and Casey Erdman recovered for the Tigers to seal the victory.

Ethan Stringer was named player of the game for Beechwood and Jameel Lyles won the award for Lima. Stringer's kickoff return was named play of the game.

Other outstanding players in the game for Beechwood were Joe Studer with several nice defensive plays. Devon Everett is playing great football for Beechwood from his defensive back position. McKown is making plays on the line. The Tigers offense has some work to do. A win is a win and it was over a big D2 school from Ohio that has some very good athletes. The Tigers need to celebrate the win and focus on getting better for next week in their home opener versus another big school in the improved 6A Dixie Heights team.

Glad that they have one in the W column, but this game was ugly!

Losing Thomas would definitely be a blow. He was starting on both sides of the ball. However, this Beechwood team is very deep in talent at the skill positions. For example, when Thomas went out and Stringer moved to the backfield, that led to Carter Burns getting playing time at receiver and he was a starter last year. On the defensive side, Carter's cousin Jeremy Burns stepped in at Thomas' CB position and he is possibly the fastest player on the team. The Tigers have good, talented players that can and will step up if necessary.

Let's hope the injury isn't serious. Best wishes to Mitch. He has worked so hard and it is finally his turn as a senior. My fingers are crossed that he is able to return to the field soon.
