Nice to see we have such a high degree of unanimity among the BGP conservatarians. I think more people nowadays vote against a political party than for one. In my case, I will continue to vote for Democrats as long as Republicans keep trying to suppress the vote -- N.C. being the latest example.

I agree. And when the Republicans focus more on their big-tent message and less on voter suppression/intimidation, the Grand Old Party should do better in national elections. It does not take a masters degree in mathematics (though it helps) to understand the statistical probability of what happened in Philly or Cuyahoga County. Given the acknowledged fallibility of the mechanics of voting how can it be that not one person even made a simple mistake and hit the wrong button, punched the chad or marked the wrong box? Even it areas with high percentages of elderly or under educated - absolutely no one made a human error in voting. The mathematical statistical and practical factors rule against the lack of organized fraud.

They are the party closest to my beliefs as well. I just won't waste my vote until a 3rd party has a viable candidate.

I was a Republican from the day I first registered to vote...

 

There were many reasons for that... I'm not comfortable with idea of a centrally planned economy; in theory, good governing is done at the smallest level possible (locally, then statewide, and nationally if necessary); I worry that dollars spent by the government are dollars not spent by private firms or individual people that know how to use it more effectively.

 

...until 2010, when I switched my registration to the Democrats.

 

There were many reasons for that... I was never sold on the Republican plan to privatize Social Security; while I believe small government run at the most local level is a good thing, I don't believe that government itself is an enemy to be crushed; the big push in 2004 to boost conservative election turnout by pushing anti-gay marriage amendments around the country made me sick.

 

In truth, I'll never really fit under either of these umbrellas. To quote Tolkien's Treebeard: "I am not altogether on anybody's side because nobody is altogether on my side." These days I lean left but in any election I'll weight things and see who I come up with.

There is never going to be a perfect candidate for us, unless one of us decides to run for office our selves. That said, how many things can you disagree with an candidate on and still vote for them?
