They are the party closest to my beliefs as well. I just won't waste my vote until a 3rd party has a viable candidate.

I went through a change. My dad is STAUNCHLY conservative...I doubt there is anyone in the Rep party that is conservative enough for him. After high school I had a more liberal view and didn't agree with my dad...might have been a little rebellion in there as well. As I grew a little older I came back to the conservative side...maybe more so than some, but not quite a far right as my dad. Here's the influence he had on me. He and mom both...to put it bluntly poor white trash red necks. Didn't have two nickels to rub together or a pot to pee in when they got married. Worked 2, 3 and sometimes 4 jobs at one time to try and make a living, and dad with pretty much no education (dropped out in 8th grade to work the farm). Worked his butt off just to try and make ends meet, was able to scrape together a few bucks, made some investments, bought a few small businesses...basically did the "American Dream"...with a good women by his side...could not have done it without my mom's help for sure. That's the background I come from.

 

With that said, the ONLY reason I am listed as a Rep and not an Independent is, as mentioned before, so I can vote in the primary. Was list as Ind for a year, couldn't vote in the primary that year and went to the courthouse and immediately changed.

I do believe in most republicans beliefs but do not pull a straight party ticket, though I may have voted that way at times. Growing up in Campbell County the Democrats are fairly conservative anyway.

I'm not a fan of a 2 party system. Funding has too much control over what platform the candidates have to follow. I think one should be able to pick and choose his/her beliefs and run on those issues. Not necessarily following what the party that funds the campaign believes in.

I have a friend who was a big time anti abortion catholic. Never considered the democratic way based purely on that one issue. Her son came out of the closet and now she has crossed over to the democratic side. It makes for some great conversation.

Nice to see we have such a high degree of unanimity among the BGP conservatarians. I think more people nowadays vote against a political party than for one. In my case, I will continue to vote for Democrats as long as Republicans keep trying to suppress the vote -- N.C. being the latest example.

Actually, my advice to the GOP is "go for it." Keep trying to suppress the vote. All this does is invigorate the opposition.

If one vote is done illegally then a change needs to be made. The purity of our elections needs to be flawless. I don't care if its 1, 100, or 1000 ballots. If it is happening we need change. In North Carolina what you cite is only the ones they catch. Are we really naive enough to think there probably aren't even more that they don't catch?

I was a Republican from the day I first registered to vote...

 

There were many reasons for that... I'm not comfortable with idea of a centrally planned economy; in theory, good governing is done at the smallest level possible (locally, then statewide, and nationally if necessary); I worry that dollars spent by the government are dollars not spent by private firms or individual people that know how to use it more effectively.

I was never sold on the Republican plan to privatize Social Security; while I believe small government run at the most local level is a good thing, I don't believe that government itself is an enemy to be crushed; the big push in 2004 to boost conservative election turnout by pushing anti-gay marriage amendments around the country made me sick.

 

In truth, I'll never really fit under either of these umbrellas. To quote Tolkien's Treebeard: "I am not altogether on anybody's side because nobody is altogether on my side." These days I lean left but in any election I'll weight things and see who I come up with.

They are cracking down on people voting without identification. Any person who is functionable in this country has an ID or should have an ID .
