This isn't directly related to the issue but is on some level.... Just my opinion, but there are far too many people making decisions about education that spend more times in board rooms than class rooms. Now, this was put to a vote and given approval by schools, so maybe this doesn't apply as much (though I'd like to see who is submitting each schools vote). But bottom line is is that some of the standards educators are being held to are incredible. Take that as you like it.

 

Now, concerning this vote, it's great on some level. Now we will have kids that have to at least complete the 11th grade in most cases. However, anyone that has spent time in a classroom as a teacher can tell you there is nothing worse than a student that has absolutely no interest in learning. Now, I've heard many people say "it's the teacher's job to make them want to learn and get excited to learn!" That's true. To an extent. In reality, there are twenty-some students in the classroom, and if all but one are interested in actually gaining knowledge that day, then why do the rest have to suffer and not get as much out of the class as they should because Mr. so and so has to take care of one student because they are being disruptive because they think it will get them out of work.

Our governor never saw a federal handout he wouldn't jump through hoops to get.

To me this is one of those things that on the surface sounds good, but IMO is a bad thing to do.

 

I just feel like the side effects are worse than the cure. Now we are going to force all of the punks who don't want to be in school to go to school. They're not going to be disruptive and interfere with the education of the kids who want to learn(yeah right). I'm sick and tired of laws being passed that hurt the people who want to do well.

 

I'm not saying all of these kids are punks, some are not, but my experience is that most are. If I've got a 14-15 year old girl, I don't want her to be forced to be around them.

I'm not that familiar with the new law, but couldn't the under 18 kids use the "home school" loophole? They just have a parent withdraw them with intent to homeschool and then that's it. They don't work on education until they are 18 then officially drop out.

 

A LOT more to it than just saying "I'm being home schooled". There are rules to follow, guidelines that have to be meet, tests that have to be taken. They actually have to be schooled and they are checked on.

I have always felt 16 is about the right age to allow a student to drop out of high school. In fact, I think it should be encouraged in many instances. If at 15/16 you have no interest in looking at a college or furthering your education, there should be a program in place that enhances one's trade skill(s) of choice so that said person can begin a career in that industry. Offer free tuition to these folks. We have such a jaded view of what we should all be. Not every person in America is to aspire to be the next white collar mogul. In America we turn up our noses at skilled laborers in professional trades; and that comes from our leadership in Washington and on down. You want to help get America turned around??? Quit shipping every kid in America off to college. The college diploma has now become a high school diploma.

It is increasingly required because everybody and their mother goes to college now. The college degree has been devalued so much in today's society. I always felt college would be more about sharpening your skills at a specific profession. But it is filled with electives, often many courses being information regurgitated you have learned through middle and high school. College should be 2-3 years maximum in length. However, since we DO NOT have an education program in place for the kids that probably won't go to college, I like the drop out age to be 18. Those kids need to be in school somewhere. Hopefully this law will help the schools to provide more education options and skilled trade opportunities for the non-college bound 16 to 18 year olds.
