Chris Christie is a self-centered, pompous hack, who will do or say anything to win an election. If Republicans nominate him in 2016, then it should effectively bring an effective end to the party's relevance at the national level. Supporting Obama's policies and bashing Republicans may play well in a blue state like New Jersey, but Christie faces an uphill battle to overcome his betrayal of Romney in the final days of the 2012 campaign. One thing that I do admire about Christie is his ability to think on his feet and deliver a speech without a teleprompter. He is no Ted Cruz, but he is a very good public speaker.

I see Christie as this election cycle's John McCain. The media are fawning over him now but will turn on him in a general election just as they did McCain. I have little or no doubt the media will push him as the GOP's best chance for a win in 2016 and really put him out there prior to the early primaries.

Mike Pence, Bobby Jindal and Scott Walker were among the panel Christie was a part of. They were smart not to comment.

Obama fed the birther movement by spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees to keep records sealed that previous presidents and presidential candidates made public voluntarily. To my knowledge, Cruz has made no attempt to impede any investigation into his citizenship status or his academic record, which I understand is exemplary. Clyde's assessment of Cruz as "whacky" notwithstanding and contrary to your shocked color, Democrats have already begun a campaign against Cruz's eligibility to serve as president because they assume that his situation is identical to Obama's. Unlike Obama, Ted Cruz has no need to employ an army of attorneys to conceal his past because the details are already well known. When Cruz finds it necessary to write a couple of whacky autobiographies to provide a dueling phony narratives for his life, then maybe I will share your shock.

 

As a conservative/libertarian, Cruz's alienation of "nearly as many from his own side" is a plus because I understand that many Republicans are really on the same side as Obama, Reid, and Obama. If Cruz alienates party hacks like McCain, Graham, and Boelhner, I see it as a good thing. He has done so by speaking truthfully, calmly, and in a very forthright manner, which is all it takes in Washington to ruffle the feathers of establishment Republicans and Democrats.

 

I stopped following developments on the birther movement when it became obvious that the majority of Americans simply would not support the removal of an elected Democratic president, no matter what in his past Obama was fighting to hide. However, I do recall enough of the birther arguments to understand that questions about Cruz's eligibility do not parallel the ones surrounding Obama as closely as many Democrats (and undoubtedly many established Republicans) believe that they do.

Cruz is simply whacky and not good for the country. Period.
