An Ohio school district will allow some employees to carry guns on school property

Featured Replies

The Newcomerstown Exempted Village School District board recently approved a policy authorizing employees designated by the board and superintendent to carry guns.

The (Dover-New Philadelphia) Times-Reporter says the district released few details of the plan that will go into effect in the coming school year. Board President Jerry Lahmers says it would be counterproductive if the general public knew how many people were authorized to carry weapons or in which buildings they worked.

Those carrying guns must get tactical training and be recertified by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Department annually. They also must have a permit to carry a concealed handgun.

Good idea or bad idea?

I like it!

Training by Sheriffs Office and must be a Carry Conceal Permit holder hopefully will satisfy most concerns.

My only stipulation would be that the weapon must be on their person, can't see where leaving it in a desk or purse would be safe in any way.

I think I'd rather the staff have guns than the kids or general public. Atleast they have some certification. The question becomes, does a band teacher with a 9mm serve as a deterent to a maniac with no regard for his life or those of the kids?

Our school just put up a new sign saying no guns allowed on school property. I'm sure that will work just as well.

I saw stats in another thread a while back that said a active shooter shot something like 10 to 20 times less people when confronted with some one else with a gun. In a lot of cases when confronted they shoot them selves instead of any one else.

So the more guns (in responsible hands) in the school the better.

Hadn't heard that stat. Much rather have them shooting themselves than the innocents around them.

Great idea....

As I have explained exhaustively in previous threads...I am dead set against it.

Are you sure, you've not been clear on this point in the past :lol2:

 Only the obtuse don't think I've been clear. :D

I always thought a fair compromise for this was to give just the principle and asst principle access to guns.

I'd prefer my son conceal one, but since that won't fly, I'm all for it.

I only think this is a good idea if everyone that carries a gun receives ongoing, intensive training. I don't mean any of those bare bones carry concealed classes. I am talking 3 to 4 times a year each person train at least a half of day with their firearm. They would need to work on basic firearm skills and scenarios relevant to school shootings. There are companies and law enforcement officials that specialize in this type of training. And not everyone will make it through the training.
