I always thought a fair compromise for this was to give just the principle and asst principle access to guns.

 

 

On the surface, I can agree with this but if I am the deranged shooter, guess who I am going to barge into and kill first? Whereas if I don't have a clue who is armed or not, I will probalby choose the school district in the next county which doesn't allow staff to carry.

Amen. I am only for this if training is extensive, ie two or more day classes. A teacher with just concealed carry training would not have enough training to ensure that he/she would not freeze up in a tense situation, know how to out manuever the armed suspect. While this guys is a little too GI Joe for me, there is a guy down in Camden, TN who is former SWAT/Contract Security in Iraq who teaches multiple day courses which drills in the mind set one would need for how to react, how to think clearly under extreme fear and stress and how to make quick decisions (shoot/don't shoot). Also a class is taugh about trauma medical care to provide untill help arrives. Stopping blood loss could save a life.

 

On medical treatment, we were taught to step over them and stop the threat. This is another aspect that the teachers need to be trained on. Contrary to normal procedure, assisting the injured is of zero concern until the threat is stopped.

 

With all that said, there is some training out there that attempts to do both (help the injured and stop the threat) but that is only when several well trained professionals have assembled together. For an armed teacher his/her job is simple, stop the threat and nothing else. Then once the threat is stopped they can turn their attention to the injured.

I fully acknowledge that an armed staff person would not stop an armed suspect from killing, what I hope is once confronted, that would bring the carnage to an end (whether that be the shooter commits suicide as one mentioned or the staff person shoots him) instead of more and more people being shot.

My point is there is no way of knowing when that could happen. She was perfectly normal...then flipped out...throwing things, screaming, etc. What if she'd had a gun?

While I understand where you are coming from, I have a feeling this teacher was probalby disturbed BEFORE flipping out even if he/she did not look like it and in such a state may have brought a gun to school regardless to what laws tell he/she cannot do. I would say the odds of an disturbed student or disturbed person off the street is 1,000 time more likely than a disturbed teacher so when that student or person off the street comes into a supposed "gun free zone", if I were a student, I would really wish I was no longer in a gun free zone and wish a staff or faculty member was there to confront the shooter.

One answer would be School Resource Officers in every school but funding for that isn't possible for every school. On other threads discussing this subject several (anti government types) objected to the presence of Law Enforcement in the schools too.

That is disturbing to hear but what if she had a gun? Who would of stopped her?
