July 15, 201313 yr Was watching a movie the other night and for some reason this topic popped in my head. Who, if anyone, is this generations Steve McQueen? For you youngsters out there, McQueen's nickname was "The King of Cool". Women wanted him, men wanted to be him. He was the coolest cat around at a time when there were a lot of cool cats. He made great movies and exuded toughness and grit, both on screen and off. He did many stunts in his movies and would have done more if allowed. He raced cars and motorcycles in his personal life, motorcycles being a great love of his. He was a true "man's man". Is there anyone who comes close today? I was watching a Bruce Willis movie when I was thinking about this, and he came to mind as a possible candidate, but only because I couldn't really think of anyone else, not sure he really comes that close. He's made some cool movies and seems pretty manly, but I don't think he's lived the "cool" personal life McQueen did what with his cars and motorcycles and all. Although he was sleeping with Demi Moore at the height of her hotness, so he does get points for that. And don't anyone even bring up names like Tome Cruise, he's just plain weird, or Brad Pitt who although not quite as weird, is similar. Stallone maybe? But again, he just doesn't exude the "coolness" that McQueen had in my opinion. Any other possible candidates out there?
July 15, 201313 yr George Clooney comes to mind for me. I pay little attention to actors outside the movies, so it is hard for me to say who is "King of Cool" outside their acting. Another name to consider as I think more on this is Daniel Craig (the new Bond). Edited July 15, 201313 yr by Voice of Reason
July 15, 201313 yr Author Uuuugh! George Clooney? No way! I'd vote for Pitt before him, and as I said earlier I wouldn't even consider Pitt for the mantle. Craig? Movie wise yep I can see him being considered. Don't know much about his personal life, which in my opinion has to be considered, it's part of what made McQueen so "cool".
July 15, 201313 yr As much as I hate him, it was Tom Cruise at one time. It's certainly not him anymore though. Denzel, Clooney, & Pitt are the first names that come to my mind. Maybe Will Smith as well, though he seems to be fading of late also.
July 15, 201313 yr For the longest time I thought this title belonged to Robert Redford. But it is definitely time for him to pass that torch. Going to have to put some thought into this one.
July 15, 201313 yr This is like asking who is today's Johnny Cash, Elvis, John Lennon, Gary Cooper (OK Hanks is close to this) or Paul Newman. Some guys just can't be replicated. I don't think anyone encompasses the whole Steve McQueen "Thing" he is the King of Cool.

Randy mentioned Denzel...I had not thought of him but I would put him on the short list for sure for his movies. Again I think he lives a pretty pedestrian personal life...I mean, no one is making a documentary about him and his friends riding/racing motorcycles.

I thought of someone, Ewan McGregor, he does those types of things. He and a Buddy rode Motorcycles from Ireland to South Africa (used a ferry or two). I remember watching some of the documentary. Ewan is a pretty cool guy and after all he was Obi-Wan Ken-Obi. They also travelled from London to New York via central Europe, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberian Russia, Canada and USA on BMW R1150GS Adventure motorcycles, for a cumulative distance of 22,345 miles McGregor appeared in a two-part BBC documentary in April 2012 entitled Ewan McGregor: Cold Chain Mission in which he travels by motorbike, boat, plane and foot to deliver vaccines to children in remote parts of India, Nepal and the Republic of Congo. The trip was part of his work as a UNICEF Ambassador. Who would have thought it Ewan=Steve
July 15, 201313 yr I think you need to start with a list of "A-List" actors from this generation. Also, a definition of "this generation" wouldn't hurt either. For example, is Al Pacino "this generation" at 73 years old? If so, is Ryan Gosling also "this generation" with his 32 years of age? A few A-listers that come to mind for me: George Clooney Brad Pitt Will Smith Mark Wahlburg Adrien Brody Denzel Washington Ryan Gosling Tom Cruise Johnny Depp Leonardo Dicaprio Al Pacino Tom Hanks Ben Affleck Matt Damon Robert DeNiro Justin Timberlake Morgan Freeman Jake Gyllenhaal Bradley Cooper Kevin Spacey Jeremy Renner Tom Hardy Christian Bale Ryan Gosling is pretty high up there in my book right now. I'd also say Justin Timberlake and Bradley Cooper are really close to the front in the competition too.

July 15, 201313 yr Be hard pressed to call some of those guys A-List actors...is Timberlake even an actor? I'd say Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper make the A-List, easily. Renner and Hardy might be a stretch (I was typing the list off the top of my head), but Timberlake isn't too far off of the A-List at this point. He's probably been in about a dozen movies, with either lead roles or major supporting roles in about half of them.

They are pretty boys but haven't done any roles that would place them on the top of the pile of current male actors. But that is my opinion, but to the thread none of them are close to Steve McQueen.
July 15, 201313 yr Leo, Ryan Gosling, or Clooney are all good choices. However, this starts and ends with one name.....Denzel Washington.

July 15, 201313 yr Personally, I would hardly describe Denzel Washington as "cool". Good actor? Yes. Cool? Not so much. Rightly or wrongly, every time I think of Denzel I think of Frank Lucas or his character from Training Day. Cool as they come IMO. :idunno:
