Grant County 2013/2014

Any team that lost its best player and not to mention the best player in the 8th region will not be fine. They were a good team with Carr but the truth is they will be average at best without him.

You are obviously biased against the Grant County program. You went from being a big time supporter to a basher. I got to see Grant play at NKU and talked to media guys who saw them play at Holmes. They will be a factor in the 8th and I predict a 20 win season.

Summer ball means squat... Is Grants schedule improved this year?

Yes it is. Which means they could have a "worse record" than they did last year...but still be better prepared for the postseason.

I hate to say losing a kid like Carr can be a "plus" for the team. I mean, obviously, who doesn't want someone that can go out and score 20+ ppg on a consistent basis?!? But, the thing is, Tyler took a lot of shots to get those 20 points. So, even though GC may not have a superstar on their team this year...they could actually end up having a better "team". (And I use the term COULD...because even though kids will be presented with opportunities that they may not have had before, it'll still come down to them taking advantage of them. And all of THAT, remains to be seen.)

Lets get something straight. I am not bashing the Grant County program. My sour grapes are towards the administration (Superintendent and Principal) for not keeping a very good coach here. If he stays then Carr stays and we have a shot to win the region. My opinion is just that the team will just be average without Carr. I will still support the kids so don't accuse someone of bashing when they are just sharing there opinion. That is what this website is for.

This is ridiculous. Give me one example of a team that lost its best player and ended up being better. Look what happened when McNeil left Walton last season. Grant County will be middle of the pack in the region and maybe win 12 to 14 games which is average. I will say one more thing and then I am done with this post. Tyler Carr has scored over 1,200 hundred points. Take all of the other Grant Count players and add their points up and it will not come up to 1,000 points. You have to score points to win the game and that is where Grant County will struggle with the loss of Tyler. Believe what you want but this is how I see it

Ilooking at the stats on the khsaa site, Tyler averaged about 16 shots per game. I wouldn't call that a lot. I want my best player shooting the ball. 4 shots per quarter is not a lot . Had someone else stepped up maybe he would not have had to do what he did. I do know that Tyler knew what the talk was, I believe that is why he went wherever he did.

For the zillionth time, Tyler only took 16 shots/game because he was doubled or tripled, leaving easy looks for the rest of the guys. With no Tyler, everyone gets manned up and those easy looks aren't there. At that point is basketball and the better player wins.

I agree 100% the comments about how many shots he took is obviously someone who didn't see too many games.

I never seen this kid play, but I will say this...if my best scorer/shooter isn't shooting the ball AT LEAST 15-20 times a game, then something either isn't right, or I have an awful lot of other scorers on the floor that need to get their shots up too, and that's usually not the case with most high school teams. if the kid was scoring 20pts a game on 16 shots, I'd say he's probably hovering around the 50% range for shooting, can't ask much more from a hs guard than that as far as offense goes.

Just curious as to how some that argued for Grant being a better team this year feel about the 4-8 start?

Well, I assume this was aimed at me. However, if you go back to read my original post, I emphasized they COULD...but, made nothing of any sort of guarantee that they would.

I haven't seen all of Grant's games to this point, but the ones that I have seen have left me with the following thoughts.

Grant County's big men disappear. It seems that their tallest kid, Saylor, spends the majority of his time running from corner to corner on the baseline looking for a 3. I know he's hit some every now and then, but how in the world does your PF/C end up being 2nd on the team in attempted 3's? And, as to Schneider, he's no where near the force (even if for nothing else, but for rebounding) inside. Put a physical body on him, and he wants no part of him.

The loss of Cummins really hurt. He was going to be one of their outside weapons, and they've had trouble filling that gap. I'm surprised he's back if the injury was what I thought it to be. But, I guess we'll have to wait and see just how effective he can be in the next two months. Hopefully that'll take some of the pressure off of Hicks to establish a perimeter threat.

Defensively, this has been a disappointment at times too. I know Grammer didn't want the kids to continue with what Hicks had instilled in them (you've got 5 fouls, you better use them)...but it's almost like the kids think they don't have to do anything now on defense. I know that's a huge generalization, and probably not accurate. But, it just seems that way to me in the stands.

This team does have some talent. However, very little of it is rising to the occasion right now. Hopefully Coach Grammer can get the ship righted.

I wasn't aiming it at anyone, but just remembered high hopes for this team. I think people that didn't give him credit will soon realize Coach Hicks might have been better than they thought.

What I've seen, it looks like Grant County has forgotten how to play defense. I wasn't a fan of the Hicks system but they did get after it. This year's team is lacking defensive intensity and playing soft.

Have they forgot how to play defense or have the refs stopped letting them hold people?

IMHO anyone who has seen Grant play in the past knew they were going to be below average. Carr is a special player and you don't recover from a loss like that easily.
