At the JV and Varsity level there is no one that plays on both sides of the ball. In fact, I think the defensive coaches handle the kickoff and punt teams and the offensive coaches handle the kickoff and punt return along with extra point and field goals. From what I understand, the kids get to choose what side of the ball they would like to play on after their frosh year of football.

And as far as locking into a position, kids are asked to give up dreams of being the next Peyton Manning or Ed Reid to do whats best for the team and become role players to help the team win:thumb:

 

It may take a yr or longer for a kid to fully understand his role but he will eventually get it...

I'm going to have to cal Oscar Myers Baloney on any coaches- let alone Highlands coaches- allowing a player to "choose" what side of the ball they will play.

Few years ago they had a kid who started safety as a frosh and was the backup QB. He said he wanted to play O and the coaches let him even though he went into summer practice 5th on the depth chart. Turned out pretty good.

They do let you choose, but they also will pull you aside and explain that you have a chance to start at another position or you can ride the bench to fulfill your dream of playing O in the fourth quarter. Turner and other coaches do a great job finding and fitting these kids into the best spot they can help the team at. In the end, when you tell a kid they have a chance to win a state title, a lot of them will do whatever it takes to get there. And with their success, you have to trust these coaches. I love that we are less than a month away!

Hahahaha! Why would you doubt this? Care to explain your thought process? If you read FTBIGBIRD's post, he pretty much summarizes it up. I have had 2 boys through the program since 2005 and they absolutely chose where they wanted to play. Another uninformed poster!

I think what is interesting is how quickly he rattled off the Offensive guys name and hesitated at times with the Defense.

In all fairness, it would be best to interview both Head Coaches next time...LOL

 

Both of my sons played Defense for Coach Weinrich and when asked over time what did Dale say about this and that at practice, both boys would reply

"Dad, I never see much of Coach Mueller or talk much at all with him until Friday nites"

 

I think for those that don't realize or understand what I am sayin, yes Dale is Head Coach of the Football team at Highlands but rarely sees the Defense during the week and Coach W is the Head Coach of the Defense and he rarely ever sees the Offense during the week. And when you have 100+ guys playing in your program it is alot to keep up with every kid all of the time.

 

That just goes to show you that Coach W has Dale's complete trust in handling half of the team and eventually the whole team some day...:thumb:

 

And in defense of Dale, I would say Coach W might have a hard time rattling off all of the Offensive guys as well...Just sayin LOL

 

Weinrich is a brilliant defensive coach; a perfect counterpart to Dale. Dale does have a way of getting the players motivated. They don't get much better than these two. As mentioned before, when you talk to either of them, it's like they're talking about their own kids rather than just players.
