I'm not even trying to be negative, but I see your team as the worst fit of the starting lineups. KG/Shaq is a great fit, it's having Thomas/Magic and KD also that I don't see working. KD isn't just going to sit around and wait for spot up jumpers, the dude needs the rock, a lot.

Might be the worst natural fit but it's the most talented. All of these teams would have problems fitting together. I'll take my chances with talent. KD already works as the guy with the 2nd most touches on his own team so playing with two of the best PGs ever won't be a problem for him. He's the least likely of the 3 to be effected because he already plays off the ball more than you'd think.

Great combination of inside/outside game on this team and with Chamberlain and Lucas sweeping the boards, Baylor and Maravich would get a lot of second chance shots.

This is a freakin' good team. Joe D was a stud on defense, which in an "all-time" team format is very valuable as he stands a good chance against most 2 guards. McHale and Kareem would not be stopped down low and the Big O would be a joy to watch. This team seems to have tried to do what I did with mine and fit guys together. What a great job with this squad.

Well I appreciate the comment, and I see you recognized exactly what I was trying to do. I tried to make a "team" of guys that fit and would hopefully complement each other and be good team players with several players that that could be flexible in the rotation with a couple having defined roles. I can see these guys fitting together very well and playing great team basketball. I only see one possible weakness on this team, and it might be a perceived weakness.

 

I can go big if I want (Big O, Rick Barry at 2, Issel at 3, McHale at 4 and Kareem at 5). I can go small (Bing at 1, Joe D at 2, Barry at 3, Unseld at 4 and Issel at 5) and each of those lineups would be competitive with any lineup anyone could throw out there, and I believe on average beat the other teams more often than not. I think I have players that complement each other (McHale and Kareem I think would be awesome together, Big O and Joe D would be a wonderful back court). I also drafted a bench that has someone that can come and fill each of at least two positions (Bing can play 1 or 2, Issel can actually play the 3 4 or 5 if need be, Unseld can play 4 or 5). I have guys with supreme talent (Kareem and Big O are top 5 players on most anyone's all time lists) I have guys with grit and tenacity (Rick Barry would kill his mom and at least one of his kids to win a game, not to mention he is just a slightly smaller version of Larry Bird, Joe D is tenacious, McHale and Unseld will knock you through a wall and then stomp you through the floor). I have guys that can absolutely put the rock in the basket (Kareem 1, Issel 9 (combined ABA and NBA which I bet a lot of people didn't know he scored that many points, Issel could flat score the ball) Big O 12...and even Rick Barry comes in tied at 17 in total points scored). But, maybe outside of Big O none of the others have a need to dominate the ball, and even Big O I think wouldn't need to but just had to at times when playing in Cincy due to lack of talent around him. On this team he could definitely look to set guys up more. I have a team that can get up and down the floor when the opportunity presents itself, or can grind it out in half court just as well.

 

My biggest potential weakness...3 point shooting. Problem with that is though, many of my shooters did not play in the era of the 3 pointer except for the guys that played some of their career in the ABA, and even then it wasn't used as the weapon it is today. I have no doubt that Rick Barry and possibly Dan Issel would be very good 3 point shooters in todays game if they put more focus on it. However, I have guys with very good mid range games...something lacking in todays game.

 

As far as the voting goes, I have a big weakness in name recognition. People either don't know or have forgotten just how good players like Rick Barry and Dan Issel were. Dave Bing was one of the first true penetrating, slashing scoring point guards. Think of him as an Allen Iverson with a good attitude and a great leader on the floor. Wes Unseld, although not a big scorer, rebounded like a man possessed and many consider him the best screening big man ever...he would knock your teeth loose on a screen if you didn't watch out, and there is a LOT to be said of that. You got guys worried about him screening them instead of playing D, and that opens things up a whole lot. He was also one of the physical strongest, toughest guys to step on a basketball court. McHale...not a better post up back to the basket 4 out there and had more post moves than Carter has liver pills (for those old guys out there). Joe D, as ekubum said, was a stud on D. Kareem and Big O speak for themselves.

 

I will be honest here, there isn't a weak team on this list. I do believe, however, that there are 2 or 3 teams that fit together better than the rest, the players complement each other, and they have a good bench/depth. And of those I think I have a great case of my team fitting together the best and really not having any weaknesses that can be exploited. I like this team. I like this team a whole lot. I think I make a good case of why my team is the best "team".

I've looked over the votes and voters and I have learned a lot about individual posters in this thread. That alone makes it worth it.

 

This was really fun guys, I enjoyed it very much. I am a huge NBA nerd and love it more than most. I like the history of the league as well. If you like NBA history read Simmons' book, it's quite good.

 

I do think my team was best but 2 other teams I could respect as a better choice, the leader in the clubhouse isn't one of those and I think is by far getting to much credit on names alone.

Exactly, each of these teams could win a series against each of the others...(well one of them couldn't :lol2:), under the right circumstances.

I've got 2 of the 3 best PGs (4 if you include TE Big O), one of the most dominant big men in the history of the game that only potentially one person could guard, a nice combo of KG to go with it. One of the best playoff performers in league history in Worthy, the 3rd best rebounder in league history, KD who is a tremendous talent who could end up passing many of those drafted above him and Reggie. The starting back court would take time to figure out but my team is stacked.

Hakeem would front Shaq and he would never get the ball, too quick for Shaq and strong too. Not Shaq strong but strong enough. Shaq would have no answer for the Dream Shake and would foul out trying to stop the offensively superior Hakeem. Gilmore has the size to block Shaq which is something not a lot of guys can do, again much quicker than Shaq.

 

Magic Johnson and Isiah would have trouble guarding Ice and Clyde Frazier and neither would have a shot at stopping Iverson off of the bench. If Magic started causing me problems I would put LeBron on him.

 

Kevin Garnett I love KG but Karl Malone would be more than enough to handle him, even if it is a draw I win in the long run.

Reggie Miller great shooter but not enough of an athelte to handle David Thompson

 

Dennis Rodman and James Worthy both are great players one rebounds and one scores but neither does both, I could just go Big and put Gilmore on Shaq and Hakeem at the 4...neither of these guys have anything for Hakeem.

Please..... of all your arguments this one is the most laughable. I'm hoping you don't actually believe half this crap and are just going to bat for your own squad, which I understand to a degree.

Not to pick on Cats3x, but since his team seems to be the topic of conversation. Is Cats3x team good? Sure it is, its very talented. Is it MORE talented than ALL of the other teams? No it isn't. Do I think my TEAM is better? Yes I do, as are probably a couple of more. He has only one player I would trade for at any of my positions, and that would be Magic. Has KD done enough to even be considered in this conversation? No, he hasn't. That's not a slam on him, he's a very good ball player, but does he fit in with the HISTORICAL great's of the game yet? I question that and I question his ability to perform against many of the players on this list. I could also see a lineup that could be on the floor at some point in time together that would be pretty weak defensively, though could be pretty good offensively. However, in a format like this it would be tough to give up too much on defense at any one time. Cat's initial starting lineup had Magic and Thomas in the backcourt together. Personally no way I do that and I don't think it works at any level, Thomas would strictly be my backup pg, unless for some reason Magic is at the 3 or 4 spot, which again would be crazy to do with this lineup unless several guys are in foul trouble. And although being a Carolina guy and Worthy being one of my all time favorite players, I don't think he would be the same player with Thomas at the pg position and he becomes less effective. Rodman definitely adds def and rebounding, but does noting for you on the off side of the ball, and if Miller isn't hitting 3's he's pretty much a non factor in my book and a BIG liability on D, so the bench has some holes. So yes, there are several arguments that can be made of why Cats3x's team isn't the best, just as many arguments that he can make for it being the best.

 

What I want to see is an in-depth post by all the owners (like the one I made) of what makes your specific team the best. I thought I would see more of those by now.
