July 24, 201313 yr I think that is right as they were showing it last year on a segment. Seems like Tony Gwynn is right outside the top 5. Really the only thing this does is lead to more questions. If you did not vote for some of these guys as first ballot HOFers (Babe Ruth, Mays, etc.). They should revoke your voting rights right there. Who is a 1st ballot HOFer if those guys are not?[/QUOTE] Agreed.

I said the same thing about Rickey Henderson. If you're a writer and didn't vote for him on the 1st ballot you should lose the privilege. I don't care if he was eccentric and odd, dude's career could be broken into two and they'd both be borderline hall-of-famers. A top 10 offensive player of all-time. Crazy numbers!
July 24, 201313 yr Correct. #5 with 98.19%. I dare say Cal and Brett are NOT anywhere close to all-time Top 5 guys. But, they were "nice guys" (along with Gwynn)...so they got the votes.

July 24, 201313 yr Correct. #5 with 98.19%. I dare say Cal and Brett are NOT anywhere close to all-time Top 5 guys. I can make a case that Cal Ripken Jr. is the most overrated baseball player of all time. People's first reaction is "WHAT?" but do not misconstrue the word "overrated" with "not very good". Cal was great and worthy of his 1st ballot recognition. But when it comes down to it he is so revered because he showed up to work everyday. Incredibly admirable, but say he had missed game #1300 of his streak, and played a total of 2631 games out of 2632 games, he probably would have gotten a lot less votes.

He was a great compiler and he was able to stay healthy and somewhat productive. Agree on your importance of the streak, as well.
July 24, 201313 yr But, they were "nice guys" (along with Gwynn)...so they got the votes. I get why it happened, just don't agree with it.
July 24, 201313 yr 1st -- Mays 2nd -- Bonds 3rd -- Lou Gehrig 4th -- Hank Aaron 5th -- Schmidt 6th -- Ortiz 7th -- Bench 8th -- Ripken 9th -- Sandberg Not a lot of team speed. Wouldn't need much speed with that line up. Mays, Bonds and a young Schmidt all had above average speed for their positions.
July 27, 201313 yr Posted this in the wrong thread originally... Cool Nolan Ryan Fact: Nolan Ryan pitched 7 No Hitters which of course is the record by 3 over all players and by 5 games over any current player. The Cool Fact is that Ryan took a No Hitter into the 7th inning 24 more times. The second closest to that record is 11. Name the 5 pitchers besides Ryan, that have taken No-Hitters into the 7th inning on at least 7 occasions only to lose the No-Hitter.
September 24, 201313 yr Who is active leader in games played without playing in a playoff game at 1866?
July 7, 201412 yr Saw this today....Which active MLB pitcher once started 3 consecutive games for his team? He was the first pitcher to do so in 95 years.

July 7, 201412 yr Great question. It's one of those "we'll probably never see it again" answers. When I first saw it, I had to look up how it was even possible. Can't imagine it ever happens again in my lifetime.
